Abstract A new species of miniature fish of the characid genus Priocharax is described from a small lake near the rio Ipixuna, rio Purus drainage, Amazonas State, Brazil. It is distinguished from all congeners except P. pygmaeus by the lower number of teeth on the maxilla and dentary. It differs from P. pygmaeus by the presence of two postcleithra and 22–27 branched anal-fin rays (vs absence and 19–22). The new species is further distinguished from other species of Priocharax by a combination of characters involving the number of pelvic-fin rays and branched anal-fin rays, the number of postcleithra, the shape of postcleithrum 3, and the absence of the claustrum. Molecular evidence based on COI sequences of all valid species of Priocharax also corroborates the validity of this new species.

A new species of eelpout genus Lycenchelys Gill, 1884 is described based on seven specimens caught at a depth of about 2350 m in the Bussol Strait, southwest of the Kuril Island Simushir. The species differs from its congeners in the following combination of characters: vertebrae 26–28 + 100–102 = 126–130; interorbital and occipital pores absent; postorbital pores 3–4; suborbital pores 7 (rarely 6); preoperculomandibular pores 4 + 4; gill rakers 11–16; dorsal fin rays 118–122; anal fin rays 105–108; pelvic fin rays 2; middle and lower ray tips of pectoral fin very slightly exserted; lateral line double with mediolateral and ventral branches; pyloric caeca not developed. The new species is morphologically most similar to Lycenchelys micropora and Lycenchelys jordani, which differ from the new species in having three pelvic-fin rays (vs. two pelvic-fin rays in the new species). L. micropora has the pectoral-fin origin below body midline, whereas the new species has the pectoral-fin origin at body midline. Middle and lower ray tips of pectoral fin are very slightly exserted in L. lenzeni sp. nov., whereas they are well exserted in L. jordani and L. micropora. Mitochondrial COI sequences were analyzed from four paratype specimens and all show the same haplotype sequence. The DNA barcodes allowed discrimination of L. lenzeni sp. nov. from other species of Lycenchelys where sequence data were available. The nearest match with already published sequences was Lycenchelys antarctica, with a sequence similarity of 98.25%, followed by Lycenchelys aratrirostris (sequence similarities 97.95–97.96%) and L. jordani (sequence similarity of 97.81%).

Simpsonichtys lopesi n. sp. is described from a temporary pool located in the São Francisco river basin. This species is distinguished from remaining species, except S. adornatus, by the large number of dorsal fin rays, which makes possible a large dorsal fin base length that begins well anterior to the middle of the body, before the vertical line through the pelvic fin. This species differs from S. adornatus by the color pattern of the anal fin, which may have yellow stripes or light dots (vs. small light points), and also by the lower number of dorsal fin rays.

A third pelvic-less species of Cambeva from river basins draining the Geral mountain range in southern Brazil is described. It is distinguished from other congeners lacking pelvic fin and girdle, C. pascuali and C. tropeiro, by having six pectoral-fin rays, 20–23 dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays, 15–20 opercular and 25–30 interopercular odontodes and a different colour pattern consisting of flank dark brownish-grey with two irregular horizontal rows of small pale yellow grey marks. Whereas available molecular evidence indicates that C. pascuali is more closely related to C. zonata, a species with well-developed pelvic fin, and C. tropeiro is more closely related to C. balios, another species also with well-developed pelvic fin; osteological data strongly suggest that the new species herein described is more closely related to C. diatropoporos than to other congeners. Therefore, this study indicates that the pelvic fin and pelvic-fin support have been lost independently in each of these three species of Cambeva, which corresponds to 11% of all describe species. This result highly contrasts with the closely-related trichomycterine genera Trichomycterus, in which only one in 50 species lost pelvic fin and girdle (0.2%) and Scleronema with all the nine included species having well-developed pelvic fin. These data suggest a stronger tendency to losing pelvic fin in Cambeva, but factors favouring this evolutionary event are still unknown.

Pimelodus multicratifer, a new species, is described from the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin. The new species differs from the other Pimelodus species by the following features: 26 to 30 gill rakers on the first branchial arch; a combination of three to six rows of dark spots regularly or irregularly scattered on the flanks and several small dark spots irregularly scattered on the dorsal surface of head, supraoccipital process, and sometimes on the dorsal and caudal fins; striated lips; maxillary barbels reaching between posterior tip of the pelvic-fin rays and posterior tip of the middle caudal-fin rays.

A new species of ptereleotrine dartfish, Navigobius asayake, is described based on four specimens (45.0–52.1 mm in standard length: SL) collected from off the Satsuma Peninsula and Tanegashima island, Kagoshima, southern Japan. It is distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: second dorsal-fin rays I, 18–19; anal-fin rays I, 19; pectoral-fin rays 21–22; gill rakers 5–6 + 13–15; head length 25.1–26.4% SL; eye diameter 8.6–10.0% SL; pelvic-fin length 15.2–16.1% SL; and a well-developed yellow stripe extending from behind upper part of eye to beneath first dorsal fin.

Rineloricaria daraha, new species, is described from the rio Daraá, tributary of rio Negro, northwestern Amazonas State, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed by having seven branched pectoral-fin rays, finger-like papillae on the lower lip, a large multi-angular preanal plate, and at least four quadrangular plates of variable size surrounding the preanal plate. The new species is known only from rio Daraá and its waterfalls.

Luciobarbus kottelati, new species, is described from the River Büyük Menderes, Aegean Sea drainage, Turkey. It is distinguished from all other species of Luciobarbus in Europe and western Anatolia by the pelvic-fin origin markedly in front of the dorsal-fin origin (vs. behind). Luciobarbus lydianus, considered to be a synonym of L. pectoralis by most recent authors is a valid species and is rediagnosed.

Parakysis hystriculus, new species, is described from the Lalang River drainage in southern Sumatra. It can be distinguished from congeners in having a combination of branched pelvic-fin rays with anterior branch always shorter than posterior branch, lateral edges of head evenly sloping in dorsal view, anteriormost pair of accessory inner mandibular barbels longer than distance separating bases of left and right barbel, outer mandibular barbel with one accessory barbel, mandibular laterosensory pore between bases of inner and outer mandibular barbels present, margin of lower lip with medial concavity, anal fin rounded, caudal fin with narrow lobes having evenly-tapering posteromedial margins and 10 branched rays without secondary branches.

A new species of the genus Osteobrama is described from the Mahanadi River, Tikarpada, Angul District, Odisha state, India. Osteobrama tikarpadaensis, new species, differs from its congeners in having two pairs of minute barbels; iii–iv unbranched dorsal-fin rays with 25–33 serrae on the last unbranched ray; 15–16 branched pectoral-fin rays, and 25–27 branched anal-fin rays. The status of Osteobrama dayi is discussed and shown to be a valid species. A key to the species of the genus is provided.

A new species of Astyanax from the upper rio Paraguaçu basin, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, is described. Astyanax sincora shares characters currently used to define the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, as highest body depth approximately at vertical through pectoral-fin midlength and a low number of branched anal-fin rays (13–17). It differs from its congeners by a combination of characters, including eight branched dorsal-fin rays, six branched pelvic-fin rays, presence of bony hooks in pectoral and anal fins of males, dark midlateral line or stripe initiating posteriorly to the vertically elongate humeral blotch, and by the presence of 30–35 scales in the median longitudinal series. The generic positioning of the new species and some polymorphic morphological characters in Astyanax are briefly discussed.
