Revision of the Afrotropical flea beetle subgenus Blepharidina s. str. Bechyné (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)

A taxonomic revision of the species attributed to the flea beetle subgenus Blepharidina s. str. Bechyné, 1968 from sub-Saharan Africa is provided. The subgenus comprises 20 species, including the following six new species here described: B. aliquantula sp. nov. from Somalia, B. himba sp. nov. from Namibia, B. kasigauensis sp. nov., B. kenyana sp. nov., B. regalini sp. nov. from Kenya, and B. matabelelandensis sp. nov. from Zimbabwe. A key to all the species is given, with photos of their habitus, aedeagus, spermatheca, and main external diagnostic characters. Taxonomic notes, with considerations on similarities and affinities, and ecological data on the habitat preference for each species, are also reported.

A taxonomic revision of the flea beetle genus <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> Jacoby, endemic to Madagascar, is provided. This genus includes seven species of which three are new to science: <em>D. elegans</em> sp. n., <em>D. jenisi</em> sp. n., and <em>D. nigroscutis</em> sp. n. An updated catalogue including new material, new faunistic records, distributions, chorotypes, and ecological notes is supplied. Lectotypes for <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> <em>laevipenne</em> Jacoby, <em>D. bicolor</em> (Weise) and <em>D. scutellare</em> (Weise) are designated. Additionally, the revision comprises a key for the identification of all seven species considered, habitus photos, and microscope and scanning electron micrographs of diagnostic characters, including aedeagus and spermatheca.

Calotheca Heyden, 1887 is a flea beetle genus that occurs predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, comprising 29 species. The examination of new material is revealing a significantly higher species richness and high intraspecific variability. A group of five species, occurring in the southernmost portion of the distribution range for the genus, is here attributed to the C. parvula species group: C. parvula (Weise, 1908), C. pallida (Bryant, 1945), C. danielssonisp. nov., C. oberprielerisp. nov., and C. prinslooisp. nov. Species in the C. parvula group have strong similarities in body shape and sculpture on the integument, spermathecal shape, and for most species the morphology of the median lobe of the aedeagus. A key to species of the Calotheca parvula group is provided along with photographs of the habitus, main diagnostic characters, median lobe of the aedeagus and spermatheca. In addition to the geographic distribution, the available information on the habitat, host plants, and phenology are provided for the five species analysed.

In this paper, Psylliodes afromontana sp. nov. and P. shira sp. nov., both from Eastern Africa [Kenya (Kikuyu Escarpment) and Tanzania (Kilimanjaro) respectively], are described. The two new species are attributed to the montana species-group, currently including four other wingless species occurring in the montane forests of Kenya and Tanzania: Psylliodes montana Weise, P. kikuyana Biondi, P. masai Biondi, P. manobioides Nadein. Micrographs of diagnostic characters, comprehending male and female genitalia are supplied. Ecological data for each species, including habitat preference, and phenology are also reported.

Specimens of Andreaea sect. Andreaea collected in Lesotho show morphological differences from the remaining Sub-Saharan Africa species in the group. Particularly, Lesotho specimens have much larger spores, a character diagnostic in the genus. Spore size also separates the Lesotho specimens from typical A. rupestris from the Northern Hemisphere. Consequently, we describe a new species from the highlands of Lesotho (Andreaea barbarae). Additionally, we present a taxonomic key to all accepted species of Andreaea sect. Andreaea in sub-Saharan Africa.

The supraspecific taxonomy of the species traditionally attributed to the flea beetle genusBlepharidaChevrolat, 1836 is discussed. A cladistic analysis, based on 30 morphological characters of traditionalBlepharidaspecies, has revealed that two genera occur in Sub-Saharan Africa:CalothecaHeyden, 1887 andBlepharidinaBechyné, 1968. The latter genus is known from Africa, and probably also Madagascar, and has two subgenera:Blepharidinas.str. andAfroblepharidasubgen. nov. Twenty-seven traditionalBlepharidaspecies are here attributed to the genusCalothecaHeyden, while eighteen species are assigned to the genusBlepharidinaBechyné. FourBlepharidinaspecies,antinorii(Chapuis, 1879),gedyei(Bryant, 1948),scripta(Weise, 1904) andsomaliensis(Bryant, 1948), belong to the new subgenusAfroblepharida. The net-spinning caddisfly genus Leptonema Guérin contains about 120 species, making it the largest genus in the subfamily Macronematinae (Hydropsychidae) and one of the most diverse in the order Trichoptera (Flint et al. 1987; Flint 2008). Most species are large, with wingspans of about 60 mm. They inhabit all types of running waters and generally comprise a significant proportion of invertebrate biomass in these waterways (Flint et al. 1987). In the New World, the genus is extremely diverse, with 106 species widely distributed from the southwestern United States to northern Chile and central Argentina, including the Antilles (Flint 2008). Another 18 species occur in sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar (Munõz-Quesada 1997). Flint, McAlpine & Ross (1987) revised the whole genus, and also considered biogeographic and phylogenetic aspects. Brazil has 26 recorded species (Paprocki et al. 2004; Flint 2008).

The present revision is based on the largest sample of Euryrhynchidae Holthuis, 1950 studied to date, with special reference to Euryrhynchus Miers, 1878. The revision confirms the validity of the 8 currently recognized species of Euryrhynchidae and describes 2 new species related to Euryrhynchus amazoniensis Tiefenbacher, 1978: E. taruman sp. nov. and E. tuyuka sp. nov. The species Euryrhynchus amazoniensis, E. burchelli Calman, 1907, E. pemoni Pereira, 1985 and E. wrzesniowskii Miers, 1878 are redescribed and illustrated based on specimens from the type series and additional material. Additional diagnostic characters are proposed to differentiate the species of Euryrhynchus, previously separated only by the armature of the second pereopod carpus and merus.

Recent studies on both genera Abrodictyum and Trichomanes (Hymenophyllaceae) in western Indian Ocean (Madagascar and neighbouring islands) resolved many taxonomic problems and led to the identification of new species. We propose here to finalize the taxonomic revision of both genera for the region, by completing and combining an expanded rbcL molecular phylogeny with morphological investigations and field observations on all the recognized species. Our results confirm the distinction of the supposedly six species of Abrodictyum and three species of Trichomanes. They also reveal the polyphyly of the highly polymorphic A. meifolium. Additional investigations on A. meifolium suggest the existence of at least two distinct taxa: the true highly variable and widespread A. meifolium which is renamed A. parviflorum comb. nov. and the newly described A. cylindratum sp. nov. restricted to Madagascar. A key and updated descriptions (including new diagnostic characters for A. tamarisciforme) are provided for the seven Abrodictyum and three Trichomanes species present in the western Indian Ocean.
