A review of the Lecithoceridae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea) of southern Africa, based on type specimens deposited in the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History (TMSA), with descriptions of three new species

The Lecithoceridae of southern Africa are reviewed, based on material preserved in the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History, Pretoria, Republic of South Africa. A total of 22 species are recognized including three new species: Idiopteryx jansei sp. nov., Lecithocera minyodes sp. nov. and Protolychnis natalensis sp. nov. Isotypa Janse, 1954 syn. nov. is synonymized with Idiopteryx Walsingham, 1891 and Homaloxestis lophophora Janse, 1954 stat. rev. is raised to species rank, separating it from H. cholopis Meyrick, 1906. In addition, Lecithocera ochrometra Meyrick, 1933 is transferred to Torodora Meyrick, 1894 as T. ochrometra (Meyrick, 1933) comb. nov., Lecithocera officialis Meyrick, 1911 is excluded from Lecithocera Herrich-Schäffer, 1853, and Dragmatucha proaula (Meyrick, 1908) is newly reported from Kenya. It is revealed that the male genital figure for Homaloxestis cholopis (Meyrick, 1906) by Janse (1954) was erroneously illustrated, based on a different species which is probably undescribed. Another miss-placed figure of the genitalia by Janse (1954) was also found for Lecithocera aenicta Janse, 1954. Diagnosis, descriptions (only for the new species), depositories of types, and distribution data of all the known species are provided. Images of adults, male and/or female genitalia, and the venation of a few species are illustrated.

The branchial-attaching cymothoid genus, Elthusa Schioedte & Meinert, 1884 is a genus with a worldwide distribution of 36 species, including the three species described here. Elthusaraynaudii (Milne Edwards, 1840) is the only species that has been described from southern Africa. All South African material held at the National Museum of Natural History, Paris, France (MNHN) and the Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town (SAMC) identified as, or appearing to belong to, Elthusa was examined. Four species were identified, Elthusaraynaudii and three species that proved to be undescribed. Elthusaxenasp. n. can be distinguished by an evenly rounded pereonite 1 anterior margin, a roughly rectangular pleotelson, and narrowly rounded uropod apices that extend to more than half the length of the pleotelson. Elthusaacutinasasp. n. is identified by the produced and narrowly rounded cephalon anterior margin, acute uropods that are shorter than half the length of the pleotelson, and pereonite 1 anterior margin with medial projection. Elthusarotundasp. n. is characterised by the round body shape, broadly rounded uropod apices, and protrusions on the proximal and lateral margins of the merus and carpus of pereopod 7. A key to the South African Elthusa species is provided, together with a table summarising the hosts and localities of the 33 previously known species of Elthusa.

The Ellimenistes humeralis Marshall, 1947 species group is defined. Ellimenistes humeralis is redescribed, three new species belonging to this species group are described, illustrated and keyed: E. janaki Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov., E. marshalli Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov. and E. raucus Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov., all from South Africa, Eastern Cape. A lectotype of Ellimenistes humeralis Marshall, 1947 is designated. The diagnosis of the genus Ellimenistes is completed with illustrations of the female genitalia provided for the first time.

The genus Ranops Jocqué, 1991 was only known from three species so far. Three new species of the genus are described here: R. robinae sp. nov. (♂♀) from South Africa, R. tharinae sp. nov. (♂♀) from Botswana, and R. wandae sp. nov. (♂♀) from Namibia. Its distribution is discussed and a distribution map for all the Ranops species is provided. Ranops expers (O.P. Cambridge, 1876) does not belong to Ranops and is transferred back to Zodarion Walckenaer, 1826.

Newly described are three species of Strumaria Jacq. subgenus Strumaria. S. prolifera Snijman from the Kourkammaberg in Namaqualand, South Africa, is a rare species closely allied to 5.  barbarae Oberm. S. speciosa Snijman from the Sonberg, southern Namibia and S. luteoloba Snijman from Namuskluft, southern Namibia and the Richtersveld in Northern Cape, South Africa, are rare species closely related to  S. phonolithica Dinter.  S. gigantea D.Mull.-Doblies U.Miill.-Doblies is formally presented as a new synonym of S.  phonolithica. A key to the species in Strumaria subgenus Strumaria is given.

Three new species of Gladiolus L. are described from South Africa.  G. dolichosiphon is the second known member of series Blandus from the mountains of the Little Karoo in Western Cape, and is distinguished from other members of the long tubed, pink-flowered G. carneus complex by its 5 or 6 linear leaves, creamy pink to salmon flowers with a tube 30-50 mm long and longer than the dorsal tepal, and its late summer flowering. G. karooicus from the Klein Roggeveld and the northern foothills of the Witteberg, is a spring-flowering species allied to G. permeabilis but has bright, canary-yellow flowers with the lower part of the lower tepals involute and conspicuously auriculate.  G. reginae is an edaphic endemic of the Sekhuk- huneland Centre of Floristic Endemism in Mpumalanga, and flowers in autumn. It is evidently a glabrous member of section Densiflorus series Scabridus, distinguished by its long-tubed flowers, streaked with red on the lower tepals and blotched with red in the throat. Anomalously, however, it has the tubular inner bracts and large capsules diagnostic of section Ophiolyza series Oppositiflorus. A re-examination of the morphology suggests that series Scabridus is better placed in section Ophiolyza and a slightly revised classification of Gladiolus in southern Africa is proposed. We also propose the replacement name G. sulculatus for the Tanzanian species, G. sulcatus Goldblatt, a later homonym of G. sulcatus Lam. Finally, a recent sighting of what appears to be G. rubellus from northern Namibia constitutes the first record of this species in the country and a major range extension from its previous known occurrence in southeastern Botswana.

Acanthopsis is a poorly understood genus taxonomically, confined to arid parts of southern Africa. The density of the inflorescences and the morphology of the bracts are taxonomically useful characters for species delimitation. This contribution focuses on the taxonomy and conservation status of those members in the genus characterized by semi-dense inflorescences with 5-fid bracts, all of which are confined to arid parts of the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Six species, A. carduifolia, A. glabra, A. glandulopalmata, A. insueta, A. nitida and A. scullyi, are recognized in this group. Three new species, A. glandulopalmata, A. insueta and A. nitida, are described. An identification key to the species of the group with semi-dense spikes and 5-fid bracts is provided.

The following four species from Jiangxi Province are new to science: Homoneura (Homoneura) jiangxiensis sp. nov., H. (H.) martini sp. nov., H. (H.) pangae sp. nov. and H. (H.) stepheni sp. nov.. For each species, a diagnosis and description are provided, along with photographs of the habitus and certain characters, and figures of male genitalia. These species belong to the Homoneura (Homoneura) henanensis group (Diptera: Lauxaniidae: Homoneurinae). A key to the species of this species group is presented. This represents the first report of the genus Homoneura for Jiangxi Province. All type specimens for the new species are deposited in the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., USA (USNM).

Abstract Three new non-geniculate coralline algal species from South Africa are described that were passing under the misapplied name, Spongites yendoi. Based on plastid encoded DNA sequences from psbA and rbcL markers, these species belong in the subfamily Chamberlainoideae. The DNA sequences, supported by the morpho-anatomical character of tetrasporangial conceptacle roof development, placed all three species in the genus Chamberlainium and not Pneophyllum, the only other genus in Chamberlainoideae. In addition to the diagnostic DNA sequences, Chamberlainium capense sp. nov., C. glebosum sp. nov. and Chamberlainium occidentale sp. nov. may be distinguished by a combination of habit, habitat, geographic distribution, and several morpho-anatomical features. Biogeographically all three species are found in the Benguela Marine Province of South Africa, with C. occidentale being the most widespread. Chamberlainium glebosum also has a wide, but disjunct distribution and C. capense is another South African endemic non-geniculate coralline, whose range is restricted to a 43 km stretch of coastline. Thus far, DNA sequences from type specimens of non-geniculate corallines show that only those species whose type localities are from South Africa are correctly applied; all other non-geniculate coralline names are likely misapplied in South Africa.
