Objectives In orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, the assessment of skeletal jaw relationships is an essential step. This study aimed to evaluate skeletal jaw relationships in a Bangladeshi cohort by using traditional (ANB angle and Wits appraisal) and newly described (Beta angle, W angle, and Yen angle) sagittal measurements in three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). Methods The radiology department conducted CT scans of Bangladeshi patients. Mimics 3D imaging software (Materialise) was used to process the CT images and evaluate 3D sagittal measurements. SPSS software (IBM) was used to assess significant differences in the data at a confidence level of 5%. Independent-samples t-tests were used to evaluate sexual dimorphism for the measured values. Results In total, 85 men and 32 women were included in this study. All measurements were equivalent to the existing standards. There were no significant differences in the acquired values between men and women. Measurements were consistent with Class I normal classification. Conclusions This study established 3D CT standards for ANB, Wits appraisal, Beta angle, W angle, and Yen angle in Bangladeshi patients.

Objective:To evaluate the bone area of the odontoid process through computed tomography and its relation with the area of one and two screws in the male and female subjects.Methods:188 CT scans of adults were analyzed. The isthmus area was selected and the transverse diameter was measured at 1.2 mm from the base of odontoid.Results:After placement of a screw, the odontoid area remains with 82% of free bone for both men and women. With two screws, 45.6% of women, had a free bone area of the odontoid process between 50% and 75% and 54.4% were above 75%. 26.6% men had percentage from 50% to 75% of free bone area and 73.4% above 75% (p=0.07). After the placement of two screws, the bone area was, in average, 77.3% in men and 75.4% in women. Using the Student t-test, the differences between the average of percentage of free bone area in men and women are significantly lower in women (p=0.0012).Conclusion:The pre-operative planning through CT can help to choose the number of screws in the odontoid process. The choice should be particularly careful when using two screws in women.

ABSTRACT Background The evolution of cone beam computed tomo- graphy three-dimensional (CBCT 3D) imaging has dramatically changed the potential for presurgical and pretreatment planning, such that outcomes are more predictable and complications more avoidable. Purpose The purpose of this article was to systematically review scientific and clinical literature pertaining to the uses and benefits of 3D imaging CBCT for diagnosis and treatment planning in Implantology including prosthodontics. Materials and methods Various databases, like PubMed, EBSCOhost and ScienceDirect, were searched from 1998 to 2010 to retrieve articles regarding the clinical applications of CBCT in dentistry. Cone beam computed tomography in dentistry was used as a key phrase to extract relevant articles in dentistry. A manual search for the references from the retrieved articles was also completed. The articles published only in English, randomized clinical trials, prospective and retrospective clinical studies, laboratory and computer-generated research were included.   The search revealed 540 articles of which 447 were irrele- vant to the study and therefore excluded. Results Cone beam computed tomography has created an opportunity for clinicians to acquire the highest quality diagno- stic images with an absorbed dose that is comparable to other dental radiological examinations and less than a conventional CT. Therefore, if placement of an implant might approach a nerve, invade the sinus, or penetrate out of the confines of the jawbone, the patient should be offered a discussion of CBCT 3D imaging. In addition, CBCT 3D patients should be advised of the risks, benefits and alternatives to such treatment, based upon any additional data provided by the imaging.
