A 46-year-old man presented with a painless mass on his dorsal right foot one week after striking it on a door. A traumatic hematoma was suspected, and needle aspiration of the mass is considered. However, point-of-care ultrasound performed by the emergency physician identified a pseudoaneurysm of the dorsalis pedis artery, a rare condition that can occur after minor trauma or iatrogenic intervention. This report demonstrates how point-of-care ultrasound can be used to identify a pseudoaneurysm of the lower extremity, thereby expediting emergency department workup and preventing potentially dangerous diagnostic procedures.

A 52-year-old man without known medical history presented with painful, progressive, bilateral lower extremity edema over a two-week period. An abdominal exam noted a firm left upper quadrant mass. Emergency department (ED) point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) revealed a hyperechoic, heterogeneous structure in the inferior vena cava that was determined to represent a tumor thrombus extending from a primary renal cell carcinoma. This case demonstrates how POCUS was valuable in rapidly diagnosing this rare cause of lower extremity edema and its usefulness in directing the initial ED management of this patient.

A 65-year-old paraplegic patient just discharged from the medical ward 2 days ago with a negative left lower extremity Doppler study for deep vein thrombosis. He presented to the emergency department for deteriorating lower extremity swelling. Point-of-care ultrasound helped to swiftly arrive at the diagnosis and facilitate prompt management.
