The Wichita Mountains Seismological Observatory was engineered and is now being operated under the technical supervision of the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) by The Geotechnical Corporation of Garland, Texas. The work is being performed as a part of Project VELA Uniform, under the overall direction of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The seismological equipment used is identical to that recommended in 1958 by the Conference of Experts for detecting violations of a possible agreement on the suspension of nuclear tests. The equipment recommended is quoted in Appendix I attached to this report. This is the first station to be built employing the recommended instrumentation and the capabilities of a control system using such instrumentation have not been determined. The observatory’s performance should be of great interest to delegates of the United States, United Kingdom, and U.S.S.R. who are currently negotiating in Geneva for a ban on nuclear testing.

In 1958 a Conference of Experts appointed by governments was held at Geneva to discuss the detection of underground explosions by seismic means, in connexion with a possible agreement on the suspension of nuclear tests. Following this Conference, a great deal of work has been done in the United States and the United Kingdom on discriminating by seismic means between underground explosions and natural events. The Discussion held at the Royal Society and reported in the following pages describes this and related work.

Prior studies have shown research projects completed as part of undergraduate curricula are not only becoming more commonplace, but they also provide substantial benefit to student learning. Given this evidence, the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership (DFBL) at the United States Air Force Academy has recently required capstone research for every cadet in the behavioral sciences major. The purpose of this paper is to describe how the human factors program has structured the capstone experience within the Warfighter Effectiveness Research Center (WERC) in DFBL. Even though some research experience has been a longstanding requirement in the human factors program for many years, the capstone sequence has led to a shift in what undergraduates are accomplishing in and out of the classroom. In addition to examples of current projects, we provide several recommendations for academic institutions to implement capstone projects.

In the 1950s the United States conducted scores of atmospheric nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site. This article studies the effects of radioactive fallout from nuclear tests on agriculture in regions hundreds of miles from the NTS. While research has shown that this radioactive material posed a health risk near the NTS, little is known about the direct economic effects nuclear testing may have had. I find that fallout from nuclear tests adversely affected U.S. agricultural production, and this result suggests that nuclear testing had a much broader economic and environmental impact than previously thought.

AbstractThe main objective of the study is to trace the perceptions of the task of an aviation component to provide direct aviation support to both ground and naval forces. Part of the study is devoted to tracing the combat experience gained during the assignment by the Bulgarian Air Force in the final combat operations against the Wehrmacht during the Second World War 1944-1945. The state of the conceptions at the present stage regarding the accomplishment of the task in conducting defensive and offensive battles and operations is also considered. Emphasis is also placed on the development of the perceptions of the task in the armies of the United States and Russia.
