In situ full-scale tests for old masonry elements: The out-of-plane response

Maneuverability of planing craft is a complicated hydrodynamic subject that needs more studies to comprehend its characteristics. Planing craft drivers follow a common practice for maneuver of the craft that is fundamentally different from ship’s standards. In situ full-scale tests are normally necessary to understand the maneuverability characteristics of planing craft. In this paper, a study has been conducted to illustrate maneuverability characteristics of planing craft by full-scale tests. Accelerating and turning maneuver tests are conducted on two cases at different forward speeds and rudder angles. In each test, dynamic trim, trajectory, speed, roll of the craft are recorded. The tests are performed in planing mode, semi-planing mode, and transition between planing mode to semi-planing mode to study the effects of the craft forward speed and consequently running attitude on the maneuverability. Analysis of the data reveals that the Steady Turning Diameter (STD) of the planing craft may be as large as 40 L, while it rarely goes beyond 5 L for ships. Results also show that a turning maneuver starting at planing mode might end in semi-planing mode. This transition can remarkably improve the performance characteristics of the planing craft’s maneuverability. Therefore, an alternative practice is proposed instead of the classic turning maneuver. In this practice, the craft traveling in the planing mode is transitioned to the semi-planing mode by forward speed reduction first, and then the turning maneuver is executed.

The main aim of the work was to investigate a simplified finite element simulation of the out-of-plane distortion caused by fusion butt welding. The thermal transient part of the simulation made use of a finite element analysis of the two-dimensional cross-section of the weld joint and the thermoelastic-plastic treatment was based on analytical algorithms describing transverse and longitudinal deformations, leading to predictions of transverse angular deformation and longitudinal contraction force. These results were then applied to a non-linear elastic finite element model to provide predictions of the final angular and overall deformations of the butt-welded plates. The validity of the simulation was investigated via full-scale tests on 4m x 1.4m x 5 mm steel plates, butt welded using a flux-cored Ar-CO2 metal-inert gas process. Thermography and thermocouple arrays were used to validate the thermal transient computations and out-of-plane deformations were measured using displacement transducers for transient deformations and a laser scanning system to measure the profiles of the whole plates before and after welding. The results of six full-scale tests are given and comparison with the simulations shows that the procedure provides good prediction of the angular and overall out-of-plane deformations. Prediction accuracy requires account to be taken of initial shape, gravity loading, and support conditions.

ABSTRACTBi-epitaxial VO2 thin films with [011] out-of-plane orientation were integrated with Si(100) substrates through TiO2/TiN buffer layers. At the first step, TiN is grown epitaxially on Si(100), where a cube-on-cube epitaxy is achieved. Then, TiN was oxidized in-situ ending up having epitaxial r-TiO2. Finally, VO2 was deposited on top of TiO2. The alignment across the interfaces was stablished as VO2(011)║TiO2(110)║TiN(100)║Si(100) and VO2(110) /VO2(010)║TiO2(011)║TiN(112)║Si(112). The inter-planar spacing of VO2(010) and TiO2(011) equal to 2.26 and 2.50 Å, respectively. This results in a 9.78% tensile misfit strain in VO2(010) lattice which relaxes through 9/10 alteration domains with a frequency factor of 0.5, according to the domain matching epitaxy paradigm. Also, the inter-planar spacing of VO2(011) and TiO2(011) equals to 3.19 and 2.50 Å, respectively. This results in a 27.6% compressive misfit strain in VO2(011) lattice which relaxes through 3/4 alteration domains with a frequency factor of 0.57. We studied semiconductor to metal transition characteristics of VO2/TiO2/TiN/Si heterostructures and established a correlation between intrinsic defects and magnetic properties.
