Embodied semantic processing: The body-object interaction effect in a non-manual task

AbstractBody-object interaction (BOI) measures people's perceptions of the ease with which a human body can physically interact with a word's referent. Facilitatory BOI effects, involving faster responses for high BOI words, have been reported in a number of visual word recognition tasks using button press responses. Since BOI effects have only been observed in button-press tasks, it is possible that the effects may be due to priming by high BOI words of the motor system, rather than activation of stored motor information in the lexical semantic system. If this hypothesis is correct, BOI effects should not be observed in tasks using verbal responses. We tested this hypothesis in three versions of a go/no-go semantic categorization task: one version required button press responses, whereas the other two versions required verbal responses. Contrary to the motor priming hypothesis, we observed facilitatory BOI effects in all three versions of the semantic categorization task. These results support the inference that stored motor information is indeed an important component of the lexical semantic system.

One of the strategies that researchers have used to investigate the role of sensorimotor information in lexical-semantic processing is to examine effects of words’ rated body-object interaction (BOI; the ease with which the human body can interact with a word’s referent). Processing tends to be facilitated for words with high BOI compared to words with low BOI, across a wide variety of tasks. Such effects have been referenced in debates over the nature of semantic representations, but their theoretical import has been limited by the fact that BOI is a fairly coarse measure of sensorimotor experience with words’ referents. In the present study we collected ratings for 621 words on seven semantic dimensions (graspability, ease of pantomime, number of actions, animacy, size, danger, and usefulness) in order to investigate which attributes are most strongly related to BOI ratings, and to lexical-semantic processing. BOI ratings were obtained from previous norming studies (Bennett, Burnett, Siakaluk, & Pexman, 2011; Tillotson, Siakaluk, & Pexman, 2008) and measures of lexical-semantic processing were obtained from previous behavioural megastudies involving the semantic categorization task (concrete/abstract decision; Pexman, Heard, Lloyd, & Yap, 2017) and the lexical decision task (Balota et al., 2007). Results showed that the motor dimension of graspability, ease of pantomime, and number of actions were all related to BOI and that these dimensions together explained more variance in semantic processing than did BOI ratings alone. These ratings will be useful for researchers who wish to study how different kinds of bodily interactions influence lexical-semantic processing and cognition.

AbstractThe present research examines the effects of body-object interaction (BOI) on eye gaze behaviour in a reading task. BOI measures perceptions of the ease with which a human body can physically interact with a word's referent. A set of high BOI words (e.g. cat) and a set of low BOI words (e.g. sun) were selected, matched on imageability and concreteness (as well as other lexical and semantic variables). Facilitatory BOI effects were observed: gaze durations and total fixation durations were shorter for high BOI words, and participants made fewer regressions to high BOI words. The results provide evidence of a BOI effect on non-manual responses and in a situation that taps normal reading processes. We discuss how the results (a) suggest that stored motor information (as measured by BOI ratings) is relevant to lexical semantics, and (b) are consistent with an embodied view of cognition (Wilson 2002).

The semantic system has a central position in the language processing system as the intermediate between language production and language comprehension. The system itself may be separated into distinctive components: visual and lexical semantics. Their is much discussion about the interference between the visual and lexical semantic system and about the quality of the processing routes. Some authors propose a unitary amodal system, other authors plead for modality-specific semantic systems. The stage of perceptual categorization is considered both as optional and as obligatory. The objective of this study is: to investigate visual and lexical semantic processing in aphasic patients (n=74) (control groups: right- hemispheric patients (n=10) and normals (n=96)) (i), to examine the relation between semantic deficits and aphasia type and severity (ii) and to explore the relation between presemantic and semantic visual processing. Instruments to measure presemantic and semantic processing: Object Decision (Riddoch & Humphreys, 1987) and the verbal and visual Semantic Association Test (Visch-Brink e.a.., 1993). Results: aphasie patients as a group were significantly impaired both in Object Decision and visual and verbal semantic processing. Some patients appeared to have a selective deficit in visual or verbal semantic processing (1). No correlation was found between the performance on the visual or verbal Semantic Association Test and the aphasia type or severity (ii). In some patients a dissociation was found between presemantic and semantic visual processing (iii). Conclusions: Visual and lexical semantic processing in aphasia may selectively disturbed, which pleads rather for a multiple than for a unitary semantic processing system. Aphasia type and the severity of aphasia do not function as indicators for the presence of a visual and/or lexical semantic disorder. For the interpretation of the meaning of a picture, the stage of perceptual categorization can be bypassed.

ABSTRACTAn individual’s sense of the extent to which her or his body physically interacts with objects in the environment (body–object interaction; BOI) has been empirically shown to modulate lexical and semantic processing of object names. To allow for further exploration of the nature of those effects, BOI ratings for 750 Spanish nouns were obtained from 178 young adult participants. Statistical analyses showed moderate correlations between BOI indicators and some psycholinguistic indexes, such as word imageability and age of acquisition. In addition, an exploration of lexical associative relationships revealed that high-BOI words have a consistent tendency to be associated with words naming parts of the body. The ratings could be useful to researchers who are interested in manipulating or controlling for the effects of BOI in their language-processing studies.
