This paper reports on the impact of Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) applied to an industrial product where manufacturability and choice of manufacturing methods can be of great benefit in reducing cost and sometimes manufacturing time in a mass production line. The purpose of this requested task is to reduce the cost of a specific product using VAVE analysis through better value estimation related to suitable manufacturing process while maintaining similar or better technical performance. A couple of technical design solutions are proposed and discussed with study cases. The work is progressing towards the final stage.

Value Analysis (Value engineering) is a relatively new management technology, based on the lowest Life Cost Cycle (LCC) and focuses on organized functional analysis activities that optimize costs and performance. The ultimate goal of the activity is to improve the value function and reduce costs, and the key is to compare and choose the best plan with creative thinking methods. Value engineering is applied to the management of construction projects. The most basic application is a qualitative analysis of project quality, cost and time, using the "preparation – analysis – innovation – implementation" stages of work to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of project

Abstract In this research, the sustainability and global sourcing competitiveness of international cruise ships is studied. The sustainability and competitiveness is just like two sides of a coin. On one hand, reducing the pollution and raw material waste is not only to protect our precious nature resources, but also to bring the cost down. On the other hand, a good global sourcing decision could deliver the cost saving and also keep the cruise ship industry towards the sustainable way. Therefore, in order to reach the goals of sustainability and competitiveness, the cruise ships may apply the current common practice of value analysis and value engineering to identify the possible global sourcing opportunity. This short exploratory paper outlines some of the characteristics of value analysis and value engineering, as illustrated by sustainability of global sourcing competitiveness. Eventually, the discussion of this paper provides some implications for international cruise ship companies. JEL classification numbers: F16, F60, Q23. Purpose Increasing demand for the best value for client’s money necessitates waste reduction while enhancing the project functionality in construction industry. The purpose of this paper is to propose Lean integrated Value Engineering (LiVE) approach by establishing the synergy between Lean and Value Engineering (VE) concepts for construction industry. Design/methodology/approach A literature survey and in-depth un-structured interviews with six subject matter experts in three steps were used to investigate the synergy between Lean principles and VE job plan to develop LiVE approach for the construction industry. The gathered data were analysed using code-based content analysis and the LiVE approach was finally validated using interviews by two additional subject matter experts representing industry and academia. Findings Research findings established that there is a synergy between Lean principles and VE job plan. Accordingly, the study developed a LiVE approach, which specify client’s value, identify the value stream, make value flow without interruption, let the client pull functional requirements and pursue perfection during “value establishment”, “value analysis of functional requirements”, “value creativity”, “value evaluation”, “value development”, “value verification” and “value achievement” phases. Originality/value The novel LiVE approach will guide construction industry practitioners on how to integrate Lean concept with VE in order to reduce unnecessary costs and wastes, to enhance project functionality and ultimately to achieve value for client’s money.
