15. PARQUE MARINO LAS BAULAS: CONSERVATION LESSONS FROM A NEW NATIONAL PARK AND FROM 45 YEARS OF CONSERVATION OF SEA TURTLES IN COSTA RICA

Groups of hawksbill sea turtles have been observed over the years, close to the coast of the Marino Ballena National Park. For this reason, in February 2015, we monitored its coast to identify aggregation sites. Turtle size estimates, and identification, were done by direct observation by the divers and from the boat. From February to December 2015, fourteen monitor records per sampling point were done and 41 turtles were recorded. They were 30cm - 80cm long and 59% of the individuals aggregated in one sample point. Five genera of sponges were registered as potential food: Haliclona sp, Spirastrella sp, Mycale sp, Aplyscina sp and Axinella sp and one tunicate, Rhopalaea birkelandi. The E. imbricata population was mainly composed of juveniles, and the turtles were found in zones where they have not been previously reported.

Marine mammals such as whales and dolphins have been known for a long time to host a very specific epizoic community on their skin. Less known however is the presence of a similar community on the carapaces of sea turtles. The present study is the first describing new taxa inhabiting sea turtle carapaces. Samples, collected from nesting olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) on Ostional Beach (Costa Rica), were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Two unknown small-celled gomphonemoid taxa were analysed in more detail and are described as two new genera, closely related to other gomphonemoid genera with septate girdle bands, such as Tripterion, Cuneolus and Gomphoseptatum. Chelonicola Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver gen. nov. has a flat valve face, uniseriate striae composed of more than three areolae, simple external raphe endings, internally a siliceous flap over the proximal raphe endings and lives on mucilaginous stalks. Poulinea Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver gen. nov. has at least one concave valve, uniseriate striae composed of only two elongated areolae, external distal raphe endings covered by thickened siliceous flaps and lives attached to the substrate by a mucilaginous pad. Chelonicola costaricensis Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver sp. nov. and Poulinea lepidochelicola Majewska, De Stefano & Van de Vijver sp. nov. can be separated based on stria structure, girdle structure composed of more than 10 copulae, raphe structure and general valve outline. A cladistics analysis of putative members of the Rhoicospheniaceae indicates that the family is polyphyletic. Chelonicola and Poulinea are sister taxa, and form a monophyletic group with Cuneolus and Tripterion, but are not closely related to Rhoicosphenia, or other genera previously assigned to this family. Features used to help diagnose the family such as symmetry and presence of septa and pseudosepta are homoplastic across the raphid diatom tree of life.

La mitad de las áreas silvestres actuales, se encuentran en los países tropicales y se crearon después de 1970. Sin embargo, las actividades humanas han alterado gravemente las áreas silvestres protegidas tropicales y el 75% de las áreas silvestres de América Latina carece de protección efectiva, planes largo plazo y recursos económicos para garantizar una gestión eficaz. Una causa parcial es que las áreas protegidas fueron concebidas utilizando el modelo conservacionista de EE.UU. de apartar hábitats no alterados “para el disfrute de las generaciones actuales y futuras”, sin tomar en cuenta la población local. El objetivo de este trabajo es documentar la ecología histórica de la creación del Parque Nacional Corcovado en la Península de Osa, Costa Rica. Este artículo presenta una reconstrucción histórica de cómo se creó el área, los actores involucrados y sus interacciones, en busca de una mejor planificación nacional de conservación. Considerando su tamaño, el parque es uno de los sistemas ecológicos más diversos del mundo, pero está expuesto a problemas relacionados con la extracción de madera, fauna y oro. La comunicación abierta y la búsqueda de situaciones beneficiosas para todos fomentó la creación del Parque Nacional Corcovado, y puede ser la clave para su sostenibilidad.PALABRAS CLAVEConservación, historia, Costa Rica, sistema de parques, conservación tropical, Península de Osa.
