This paper examines the development of the architectural plan of the Late Roman villa in the Danube-Balkan region. It firstly considers questions relating to the definition of the Roman villa, then presents a methodology for establishing a typology, before classifying villas across a large geographical area. Finally, an attempt is made to explain the chronological and geographical distribution of different plans in relation to local conditions and wider historical phenomena.
