Im Juni 1948 schickt Paul Celan Ingeborg Bachmann zu deren 22. Geburtstag sein Gedicht In Ägypten mitsamt einer Widmung. In Wien hatten die beiden einen Frühling zusammen erlebt und wissen nun nicht, was diese schicksalhafte und intensive Begegnung bedeutet. Celans Gedicht ist der Anfang einer Liebe, einer Freundschaft sowie einer Vielzahl von Verfehlungen und Versäumnissen. Noch mehr als zehn Jahre später kommt Celan in einem Brief an Bachmann auf In Ägypten und seine zentrale Bedeutung für die Beziehung der beiden zurück:

Art and literature are seismographs: they sense changes. And often they are ahead of their time and anticipate new truths. This volume attempts to show the significance of such artistic advances in knowledge and perception for the study of law by means of examples. The articles by nine authors collected here range from an introduction to the thematic connection of poetry, truth and law to an analysis of works of William Shakespeare, Charles Reade, Alexander Vasilyevich Sukhovo-Kobylin, George Orwell, Peter Kurczek, Ingeborg Bachmann, an excerpt from the novel "Justizpalast" by Petra Morsbach and a study on the TV crime series „Tatort“.

The paper analyzes three translations of a fragment of Ingeborg Bachmann’s libretto for Hans Werner Henze’s ballet, The Idiot. Bachmann’s libretto is based on Dostoevsky’s novel, but it also expresses crucial themes of her own poetry, which is underlined by the fact that the text was integrated into her book of poems, Invocation of the Great Bear. Following the transfer-oriented approach of the Göttingen School of translation research, first, the semantic structure of the source text is examined, after which, the target texts are analyzed with regard to significant deviations, which are then explained against the backgrounds of literary, cultural and social-political history. The fact that Bachmann’s text refers back to Dostoevsky’s novel plays a not inconsiderable role in the choice of texts to be translated.
