Mucor nidicola, a mucoralean fungus, was isolated for the first time from a wasp nest in Massachusetts, USA, and then reported in the state of Paraná, Brazil, as an entomopathogenic fungus collected from insects in strawberry crops. This work reports the first occurrence of M. nidicola from soil in the Brazilian Northeast. This species is distinguished from other species by producing erect, unbranched, and once-branched sporangiophores, globose to subglobose columellae, and mostly ellipsoidal sporangiospores, but with some irregular and varying in size and shape.

Mucor inaequisporus Dade (Mucorales, Mucoromycota) was isolated for the first time from soil in an area of Atlantic Forest in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. It is distinguished from other species by simultaneously producing erect, undulating and curved sporangiophores, as well as mostly pyriform, oblong, conic, ellipsoid, and obovoid columellae. The sporangiospores vary in size and shape, with some irregular in shape. Aspects of the morphology and distribution of this species are commented on.

INTRODUCTION: This paper reports, for the first time, the presence of the Eratyrus mucronatus species in the State of Rondonia, Brazil. METHODS: These specimens were caught by chance in the forest and later they were collected using luminous traps. RESULTS: After finding these specimens, the number of the Triatominae genera in Rondonia rose to four, while its species rose to seven. CONCLUSIONS: Complimentary studies will be conducted in order to allow for clearer understanding the ecology of this arthropod, its possible role in transmitting Chagas' disease and its current geographical distribution.

During a study on filamentous fungi in the soil of mountainous environments in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, one specimen of Mortierella verticillata Linnem. was isolated. Fungal identity was confirmed by morphology and ITS rDNA sequence analysis. This study reports the first occurrence of M. verticillata in South America. This species is distinguished by its monopodial sporangiophores growing on aerial hyphae of verticillate branches, and single-spored sporangia finely ornamented with a diffluent wall. In this manuscript, the specimen is described and illustrated, and the distribution of this species is discussed.

The genus Portelmis Sanderson, 1953 and the species P. gurneyi Spangler, 1980 are reported for the first time in Brazil. Portelmis kinonatilis sp. nov. and P. paulicruzi sp. nov. are described and illustrated based on adult specimens collected in two different municipalities in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Diagnoses and illustrations of all Portelmis species, and a taxonomic key to identify males are presented.

ABSTRACT (First occurrence of Dioclea ruddiae Maxwell (Leguminosae) in Brazil). Dioclea ruddiae (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) is recorded for the first time in Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Serra do Tepequém, a tepui in the State of Roraima near the border with Venezuela. This study expands the distribution range of Dioclea ruddiae in the region of the Guiana Shield, where this species is probably endemic.

Ixodes schulzei Aragão & Fonseca is an endemic tick to Brazil and has already been reported in the northern (State of Rondonia), southeastern (States of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo) and southern (State of Santa Catarina) regions, always found in association with the water rat Nectomys squamipes(Brandt). This communication records the first occurrence of this tick species in the State of Parana, southern region of Brazil, and it constitutes its first report on Akodon montensis (Thomas) andOryzomys russatus (Wagner) hosts.

Dicopomorpha Ogloblin, Dicopus Enock and Omyomymar Schauff (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are recorded from India for the first time and one new species, Dicopus noyesi Manickavasagam, sp. nov., is described from material collected from the state of Tamil Nadu. Gonatocerus bicoloriventris Zeya, G. breviterebratus Subba Rao, G. shamimi Subba Rao and Hayat, Mymar schwanni Girault, Narayanella thornypoda (Narayanan & Subba Rao) and Polynema mendeli Girault (Mymaridae) are also newly recorded from the state of Tamil Nadu.

A total of 81 Tyraniidae birds were examined, 80 Pitangus sulphuratus (Linnaeus, 1766) (Great kiscadee), and one Machetornis rixosa (Vieilot, 1819) (Cattle tyrant), for collection of nasal mites, which were identified as Ptilonyssus spinosus (Brooks & Strandtmann, 1960) and Sternostoma longisetosae (Hyland, 1961) (Rhinonyssidae). This finding characterises the first report of P. spinosus and S. longisetosae in P. sulphuratus, and the first record of P. spinosus in M. rixosa, and expands the geographic distribution of these species. It is the first occurrence of S. longisetosae in the Neotropics, and the first citation of P. spinosus in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The Amazonian species Manilkara cavalcantei is reported for the first time for northeastern Brazil in an area of “restinga” vegetation. This is the fourth species of Manilkara recorded for the state of Piauí, and the new record highlights the importance of protection of forest fragments.
