Abstract Peer review is a vital component of the publication process for the Journal of Oral Implantology (JOI), as with any scientific or professional journal. The ability to write constructive critical reviews, therefore, is a valued skill of benefit to authors, editors, and the journal. The purpose of this article is to discuss techniques for crafting useful reviews. A review should address both broad issues of wording and perception. A review should include specific issues of what to look for in each section of research papers and clinical case reports. While the article is written with JOI in mind, most guidelines expressed therein are applicable to reviewing for any journal.

Patients who for a long period of time suffer from total edentulism, a bone resorption of the jaws is generated despite using conventional mucosal supported dentures, for this reason, when the clinical case allows it, a plan should be made to perform a retained overdenture with implants, to stop bone loss with the placement of dental implants, as well as, increasing retention by means of the mechanical anchors produced by implants splinted with a bar, in addition to favoring phonetics, good salivary control and especially safety when chewing to properly grind food. A clinical case is presented of an adult patient who lost his upper teeth in a car accident and who needs chewing efficiency and a lot of security when speaking for the profession he performs, the placement of 4 splinted implants with a bar made of type IV gold. The results obtained were satisfactory for the patient, since it was achieved that the prosthesis was excellently retained which gives it security, the chewing capacity, retention, stability and support are improved, which allows the patient to feel comfortable with her rehabilitation to perform her work and social activity without problems. Therefore, oral implantology strengthens the different rehabilitation techniques in a predictable and successful way in the treatment of patients with partial and total edentulism.

Summary: We review the rationale for behavioral clinical case formulations and emphasize the role of the functional analysis in the design of individualized treatments. Standardized treatments may not be optimally effective for clients who have multiple behavior problems. These problems can affect each other in complex ways and each behavior problem can be influenced by multiple, interacting causal variables. The mechanisms of action of standardized treatments may not always address the most important causal variables for a client's behavior problems. The functional analysis integrates judgments about the client's behavior problems, important causal variables, and functional relations among variables. The functional analysis aids treatment decisions by helping the clinician estimate the relative magnitude of effect of each causal variable on the client's behavior problems, so that the most effective treatments can be selected. The parameters of, and issues associated with, a functional analysis and Functional Analytic Clinical Case Models (FACCM) are illustrated with a clinical case. The task of selecting the best treatment for a client is complicated because treatments differ in their level of specificity and have unequally weighted mechanisms of action. Further, a treatment's mechanism of action is often unknown.
