This communication is the first report of the occurrence of the order Mormonilloida (Mormonilla phasma) in the tropical Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Female individuals were found in surface waters from the shelf break state of Rio Grande do Norte (Northeastern Brazil) and between depths of 60 and 100 m in the epipelagic layer around the St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (equatorial Atlantic). This finding extends the vertical limits for this species.

Pantropical spotted dolphins, Stenella attenuata, are found across all tropical and subtropical oceans around the world, but their distribution is poorly known in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA). A group of approximately 10 S. attenuata individuals was sighted in deep (~3,000 m), warm (~27.5 °C) and oligotrophic waters, near oceanic banks off northeastern Brazil (02°04’16.68” S and 038°08’28.26” W). This sighting constitute a new record of the northern distribution of S. attenuata in SWA. More survey efforts mustbe carried out to investigate cetaceans distribution along the Brazilian coast, especially inoffshore waters.

Hydromedusae are one of the best-represented planktonic groups in waters of the South Atlantic Ocean in terms of species richness. Nevertheless, medusae of the region are inadequately known because earlier studies have been limited and restricted to few areas. During the last two decades, almost 2000 samples from 54 research cruises have been collected, mostly within the continental shelf of Argentina and Uruguay (33 – 55º S). These samples provide an opportunity to significantly augment knowledge of the richness of the medusa fauna in the southwest Atlantic. Forty species of hydromedusae (six of them new records for the area), including 15 of Anthomedusae, 14 of Leptomedusae, three of Limnomedusae, four of Narcomedusae, and four of Trachymedusae, were identified. Our results indicate that previous lists overestimated species richness of hydromedusae in the area. When misidentifications, updated species synonymies, and doubtful records are taken into account, 71 valid species are recognized here from the study area. Based upon this corrected inventory list, the data suggest that the number of species of hydromedusae decreases markedly with increasing latitude, corresponding with that observed in other planktonic groups of invertebrates.

AbstractSeamounts are often covered with Fe and Mn oxides, known as ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts. Future mining of these crusts is predicted to have significant effects on biodiversity in mined areas. Although microorganisms have been reported on Fe–Mn crusts, little is known about the role of crusts in shaping microbial communities. Here, we investigated microbial community based on 16S rRNA gene sequences retrieved from Fe-Mn crusts, coral skeleton, calcarenite and biofilm at crusts of the Rio Grande Rise (RGR). RGR is a prominent topographic feature in the deep southwestern Atlantic Ocean with Fe-Mn crusts. Our results revealed that crust field of the RGR harbors a usual deep-sea microbiome. We observed differences of microbial structure according to the sampling location and depth, suggesting an influence of water circulation and availability of particulate organic matter. Bacterial and archaeal groups related to oxidation of nitrogen compounds, such as Nitrospirae, Nitrospinae phyla, Nitrosopumilus within Thaumarchaeota group were present on those substrates. Additionally, we detected abundant assemblages belonging to methane oxidation, i. e. Ca. Methylomirabilales (NC10) and SAR324 (Deltaproteobacteria). The chemolithoautotrophs associated with ammonia-oxidizing archaea and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria potentially play an important role as primary producers in the Fe-Mn substrates from RGR. These results provide the first insights into the microbial diversity and potential ecological processes in Fe-Mn substrates from the Atlantic Ocean. This may also support draft regulations for deep-sea mining in the region.
