The leaf-spotting hyphomycete Passalora gochnatiicola sp. nov., collected on Gochnatia amplexifolia (Gardner) Cabrera (Asteraceae: Mutisieae) in the 'campos rupestres' of Serra do Cipó (Minas Gerais State, Brazil), is described, illustrated, discussed and compared with allied species.

Begonia piranga (Begoniaceae) is a new narrowly endemic species from the campos rupestres of Serra do Padre Ângelo, a quartzitic massif in Conselheiro Pena, eastern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Description, diagnosis, taxonomic comments, detailed illustrations, field photographs, and a provisional IUCN Red List Assessment are provided. The new species is considered Critically Endangered due to its restricted occurrence in high elevation rock outcrops, small population size, and decline in the quality of the habitat. Begonia vasconcelosiana, another Critically Endangered species, is also newly reported here for Serra do Padre Ângelo. These discoveries add to the increasing list of novelties from Serra do Padre Ângelo, reinforcing the urge for conservation actions to protect the endemic flora of this Serra and other areas of campos rupestres in eastern Minas Gerais state.

Two new micro-endemic species of Eriocaulaceae are described from the Campos Rupestres of Serra Nova State Park, a conservation unit located in the Espinhaço Range in northern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Herein we provide descriptions, illustrations, photographs and maps, together with notes on morphology, distribution, phenology, taxonomy, and conservation. Paepalanthus ferrugineus is distinguished mainly by the reddish-brown involucral bracts, surpassing the floral disc, with the apex attenuate and tufted adaxially, tufted sepals and hairy petals. Syngonanthus polyaxis is easily differentiated by the inflorescence architecture with three morphologically distinct axial parts. Both species are considered Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar la prevalencia de infestación de ectoparásitos asociados a mamíferos pequeños del Cerrado en el Parque Nacional Serra do Cipó, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. De abril a septiembre de 2007, capturamos 95 mamíferos pequeños, los cuales representaron nueve especies: seis pertenecen al Orden Rodentia: Cerradomys subflavus (Wagner 1842), Nectomys squamipes (Brants 1827), Thrichomys apereoides (Lund,1939), Rhipidomys mastacalis (Lund 1840), Necromys lasiurus (Lund 1841), Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers 1818, y tres al Orden Didelphimorphia: Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister 1854), Marmosops incanus (Lund 1840) y Didelphis albiventris (Lund,1841). Identificamos ectoparásitos de cinco órdenes: Ixodida, Gamasida, Phthiraptera, Siphonaptera y Diptera y varias especies de ectoparasitos como: Amblyomma sp, Laelaps paulistanensis Fonseca 1936, Laelaps differens Fonseca 1936, Laelaps manguinhosi Fonseca 1936, Tur lativentralis (Fonseca 1936), Gigantolaelaps goyanensis Fonseca 1939, Gigantolaelaps vitzthumi Fonseca 1939, Androlaelaps (Haemolaelaps) fahrenholzi (Berleze 1911), Eubrachylaelaps rotundus (Fonseca1936), Mysolaelaps parvispinosus Fonseca 1936, Ctenophthirus cercomydis Ferris1922, Hoplopleura imparata Linardi 1984, Eogyropus lenti lenti Werneck 1936, Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus 1758) y Poligenes tripus (Jordania 1933). The mammals of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna Biome) are still poorly known; only a few localities have been properly surveyed and studied. Hereby, we present a survey of the mammals of Serra do Cipó National Park, a protected area of Cerrado in Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. A total of 55 species from eight orders were listed, which have been captured, observed or recorded in the literature. Some mammals are endemic or listed as threatened either by IUCN’s red list or by the national and regional red lists. Serra do Cipó National Park is an important site for scientific research and conservation of Minas Gerais’ biodiversity, though there is little information on mammal diversity and distribution in the park. We hope our study can help us fill this gap and improve the effectiveness of this national park in protecting Cerrado mammals and other vertebrates.

The genus Hylodes Fitzinger, 1826 is restricted to eastern Brazil, occurring from the states of Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul (Lingnau et al. 2008, Frost 2010). Except for Hylodes otavioi, which inhabits riparian forests in rocky fields (“campos rupestres”) habitats within the Cerrado domain in Minas Gerais State (Sazima & Bokermann 1982), all other species in the genus are endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest domain (Lingnau et al. 2008). The genus currently comprises 24 species (Frost 2010) of small to medium-sized diurnal frogs that live associated to lotic streams in forests (e.g. Lingnau et al. 2008; Silva & Benmaman 2008). Heyer (1982) proposed four species groups for Hylodes, which are still recognized today (but see Haddad et al. 1996; Canedo & Pombal 2007): the glaber (formerly pulcher), lateristrigatus, mertensi, and nasus species groups. The Hylodes lateristrigatus species group is the most specious, being currently composed by 18 species: H. amnicola Pombal, Feio, and Haddad, 2002, H. babax Heyer, 1982, H. charadranaetes Heyer and Cocroft, 1986, H. fredi Canedo and Pombal, 2007, H. heyeri Haddad, Pombal, and Bastos, 1996, H. lateristrigatus (Baumann, 1912), H. magalhaesi (Bokermann, 1964), H. meridionalis (Mertens, 1927), H. ornatus (Bokermann, 1967), H. otavioi Sazima and Bokermann, 1983, H. perere Silva & Benmaman, 2008, H. perplicatus (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926), H. pipilans Canedo and Pombal, 2007, H. phyllodes Heyer and Cocroft, 1986, H. regius Gouvêa, 1979, H. sazimai Haddad and Pombal, 1995, H. uai Nascimento, Pombal, and Haddad, 2001, and H. vanzolinii Heyer, 1982 (Silva & Benmaman 2008; Frost 2010).

As espécies do gênero Xyris são típicas de solos brejosos ou úmidos, sendo bastante freqüentes nos campos rupestres de Minas Gerais. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o comportamento germinativo de sementes de X. cipoensis Smith & Downs, X. longiscapa A. Nilsson, X. platystachia A. Nilsson e X. trachyphylla Mart. sob diferentes condições de luz e temperatura. Os experimentos de germinação foram realizados em câmaras de germinação nas temperaturas constantes de 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 e 40ºC, sob luz e escuro contínuos, e nas alternâncias de 25-15, 30-15, 30-20, 35-15, 35-20 e 35-25ºC, onde as temperaturas mais altas referem-se ao período de luz, sob fotoperíodo de 12 horas. As quatro espécies de Xyris apresentam sementes pequenas e sensíveis à luz, com resposta nula de germinação no escuro. As sementes de X. cipoensis germinaram em faixa mais estreita de temperatura (20 a 30ºC), apresentando alta porcentagem de germinação na temperatura constante de 20ºC. A faixa de 15 a 30ºC foi favorável à germinação das sementes de X. longiscapa, X. platystachia e X. trachyphylla, apresentando baixo percentual de germinação a 15ºC. As temperaturas alternantes não favoreceram a germinação em relação às temperaturas constantes.

We described a new species of Phyllanthus currently known from a single fragment of Ombrophilous Dense Forest in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Phyllanthus pedicellatus is the second species of the genus with phylloclades found in the Atlantic Forest domain, once mostly Brazilian Phyllanthus with these kinds of specialized branches grow in open vegetation as “campos rupestres” and cerrado. The name is a reference to its remarkable pedicels of pistillate flowers. We present illustrations and photographs of the new species in its habitat, comments on its relationships to other Brazilian Phyllanthus, and its conservation status.

Two new species of Pseudotrimezia are described and illustrated. Both species are endemic to localities of “campos rupestres” in Diamantina Plateau, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Pseudotrimezia nana is remarkably distinguished by the overall size, one of the smallest within the genus, bracts on the flowering stem and leaf anatomy. Pseudotrimezia striata is noteworthy due a partly bifacial leaf that encloses the flowering stem. Morphological comparisons with similar species are also provided.

Abstract— Lychnocephalus cipoensis, L. grazielae, and L. jolyanus, three new species from the Cerrado of the Brazilian Central Plateau, are hereby described and illustrated. Lychnocephalus is characterized by its tomentose to densely lanate branches, heads organized in third order syncephalia and inner pappus series with twisted setae and narrowed apex. These new species are microendemic in the campos rupestres of Serra do Cipó, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, and were previously misidentified as other species of the genus. However, they are distinguished by their habit, leaf arrangement, leaf shape and size, presence or absence of petiole, number of florets per head, and number of pappus series, among other characteristics discussed here. These new species are described and illustrated, their affinities discussed, and a key to all species of Lychnocephalus is provided.

Microlicia furnensis, a new endemic species from campos rupestres of Capitólio municipality, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by its cream petals with pale pink blotches at the apex, sessile or subsessile leaves and golden glandular trichomes and short pale trichomes covering the leaves, pedicels, hypanthium and the calyx lobes. It resembles M. confertiflora, M. isophylla and M. flava, the latter also occuring in Capitólio, Minas Gerais state. A list of species of Melastomataceae from the mountains of Capitólio municipality is also provided.
