This paper discusses part of a practitioner research case-study which I carried out with a class of thirty-seven college students learning chemistry in a blended learning context. The full two-year study involved a multi-method interpretivist approach using observations, unsolicited meetings, VLE tracking system, students’ reflective journal, online informal discussions, questionnaires, focus groups and individual interviews. The study identified four key student online learning dispositions, i.e., the dispositions of resourcefulness, resilience, reciprocity and responsibility. These dispositions were identified as persona-related enablers for online learning and were found to be crucial for the students to develop a deep approach to learning. They were also instrumental for changes in the students as learners. These included changes in epistemological beliefs, study patterns, study habits and above all, changes in learner roles and learning identities. Notable changes occurred in a group of learners who were initially reluctant to learn from the online environment. This study showed that student learning dispositions may be transferred from one context to another. This includes a transfer of learning dispositions from the online environment to the face-to-face traditional classroom setting. Several educators argue that learning dispositions should be included as educational goals in educational curricula and should serve as practical strategies in creating learning environments. Learning activities should provide students with opportunities to develop and cultivate desirable dispositions for learning.

A digital badge system with a leaderboard ranking was implemented in an 18-week course offered by a Chinese mainland university during the 2018 Spring Semester. Fifty-four junior college students participated in this study, and the learning activities were based on a combination of online and offline methods using the Moodle system. The purpose of the study was to explore these college students’ perception of digital badges in blended learning classrooms as well as their perception of digital badges in general. Q methodology was used in a single case study of the students’ subjective experience of digital badges, and thirty-six Q-statements were selected after a comprehensive reflection of their views of digital badges. The participants were asked to sort the statements to model their opinion in a modified rank-order procedure. Twenty-two valid sorts were entered for the analysis, and three factors were identified to represent groups of participants with similar views. The results are discussed based on the views of students at a local university in mainland China and the way their demographic characteristics related to their perception of digital badges.

32 shy and 32 nonshy women were selected from a population of Japanese junior college students on the basis of their responses to the Trait Shyness Scale. This study manipulated shyness (shy and nonshy), interviewers' gaze (high amount of gaze and low amount of gaze), and interviewers' sex in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design. Subjects were randomly assigned to eight groups and interviewed by one of two male or two female confederates. Two trained judges recorded duration of gaze and speech through a one-way mirror and watching videotaped records. Analysis showed that for the interviewer in the high gaze condition the self-reported shy women gazed less while speaking than the nonshy women.
