Academy’s National Advisory BoardThe members of the National Advisory Board have a broad range of experience and expertise in neonatal care. The Advisory Board met informally in New Orleans to discuss the direction Academy will take in the future. Unfortunately, only half of the Advisory Board could attend the meeting on such short notice. Although the full Advisory Board will probably not meet until next year’s national meeting, the Advisory Board will work together this year to lay out what the Academy can be doing to provide you with a first class association.

Why You Should Come to Las VegasAt the end of last year’s meeting in New Orleans, we gave the ten best reasons why the attendees should come to our Las Vegas meeting this year. Although the list provided was intended to be humorous, there are several great reasons why you should consider coming to the meeting this year. The first reason is simply the quality of the educational program that is being presented. Fantastic and knowledgeable speakers from around the country will be presenting the latest information about neonatal care.

Academy Board Establishes New Scholarships for Academy MembersAt the Las Vegas national meeting, the Academy’s National Advisory Board established two new scholarship programs for Academy members. These scholarships promote the goals of the Academy and helps nurses achieve their own educational objectives. One of the scholarship programs will provide assistance in attending the Academy’s educational meetings. The second scholarship program will target nurses in programs that award both basic and advanced nursing degrees. Information about both programs follows this section of the journal.

‘We are building an Installation on the theme of refugees. One part of the installation consists of objects that you could carry along if you had to leave your home, at a short notice, with an unknown future.’ The objects sent to the artists carried mainly memories of survival: keys, deeds, diplomas, radios, purses… One item looked puzzling and defied what seemed essential for a future of migration into the unknown: a red, strong strident lipstick tube! A light and superfluous memory into the future, or was it so?

The Academy and Neonatal Network® have put together a roster of All Star speakers for the 2006 national meeting. We selected speakers based upon the attendees’ evaluations from our previous meetings; only the best of the best were selected for the 6th National Neonatal Nurses Meeting. These are the speakers that you’ve requested to hear again and that have received exceptional evaluations from our previous meetings. In fact, we had so many exceptional speakers to choose from, that we simply had no room to add any additional workshops. However, we plan to bring these speakers back at our future meetings.

Academy’s First Meeting Exceeds All Expectations! The first national Academy meeting cosponsored with Neonatal Network® will take place next month at the Hyatt Regency hotel in New Orleans. When planning for its first ever meeting, the planning committee was conservative and estimated an attendance of 350 to 400 nurses. However, whether it is the exceptional program, the low conference tuition fee, or the draw of a truly unique city, attendance is over 700 as this is being written at the end of June. It would not be unrealistic to forecast a final attendance figure of nearly 1,000 NICU nurses for this meeting.
