Increased rate of soil salinity caused changes in macro and micro nutrients uptake, which may lead to decline in photosynthesis capacity and respiration in the plant Syzgium travancoricum Gamble. is a critically endangered species located in damp forest with marshy land, where high rate of salt accumulation has been happening. An optimum level of salinity (0.05 - 0.07) is inevitable for the proper growth and survivability of this species in their natural habitat and also for natural regeneration. A range of reduction in the number of existing plants of this species can be seen in their natural habitat due to the salinity stress.

An extensive survey and population analysis of the endemic and endangered tree Kingiodendron pinnatum, was carried out in the Kerala area of the Western Ghats. The aim was to assess the pattern of distribution, population size and natural regeneration of the species. The fragmented and patchy populations of the species are distributed in evergreen/semi evergreen habitats within an altitudinal range of 176-680m elevation. The tree attained a first layer/canopy species with a height range from 24–30m. Altogether 17 populations were identified and mapped in 13 forest locations in the region.  A total of 140 adult individuals of the species were enumerated within the 13 forest locations. Natural regeneration of the species recorded from three zones among the 13 forest locations covering 21,000m2 area representing the Kerala state.  The flowering trees displayed a height and dbh range of 10-30m and 85-320cm, respectively. The individuals are spatially arranged in aggregation among patchy populations. The populations are well represented by reproductive individuals with 77% and pre reproductive with 23%. Seedlings of 35.9% attained a height below 1m and 64.01% of a height above 1m. Considering the extent of distribution in the state, increase in the number of mature individuals (in addition to the enumerated area), and fair count of seedlings suggests a healthier conservation status of the species in the region. The economic and medicinal values, occurrence of isolated and fragmented populations, irregularities in the flowering and fruiting period among populations, however, extends urgent concerns over the pollination biology, detection of diverse genotypes subsequent multiplication and restoration of dwindling populations for the effective conservation and management of the species in situ.

Cinnamomum travancoricum Gamble was recollected after its type from Chemunji, Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve in Kerala.  It had long been confused with C. sulphuratum Nees and several naturalists reported its collection from different parts of the Western Ghats for the last few years.  Taxonomic treatment along with distribution, ecology and color photographs are provided.

Syzygium travancoricum Gamble is an endemic, Critically Endangered tree species found in marshy swamps of the Western Ghats. An assessment was conducted on existing distribution pattern and population structure of this species in Kerala. Most of the existing populations are mainly located in sacred groves and this tree is an ideal example on role of sacred groves in conserving biodiversity especially IUCN red listed species. A total of 465 individuals were recorded in which maximum number of sapling density was recorded in Kalasamala Sacred grove followed by patches of Myristica swamps in Kulathupuzha. Fragmentation of populations, habitat modification, over exploitation, pollution and invasion of exotics are major threats to S. travancoricum. Hence urgent intervention is required for restoration programmes, management of habitat and subsequently delisting this species from IUCN red list of threatened species.

Memecylon viswanathanii R.Rajesh, P.Sakthidhasan & C.Rajasekar, a new species of Melastomataceae, is described and illustrated from the Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) in the southern Western Ghats of India. M. viswanathanii is close to M. parvifolium Thwaites and M. varians Thwaites but differs by several vegetative and floral characters. The species is assessed here as Critically endangered as per IUCN Red List.

Eurema nilgiriensis Yata, 1990, the Nilgiri grass yellow, was described from Nilgiris in southern India. There are not many published records of this species since its original description, and it was presumed to be a high-elevation endemic species restricted to its type locality. Based on the external morphology (wing patterns) as well as the male genitalia, the first confirmed records of the species from Agasthyamalais and Kodagu in the southern Western Ghats, is provided here. This report is a significant range extension for the species outside the Nilgiris, its type locality. Ecological data pertaining to this species as well as the field identification key to all known Eurema of Western Ghats are also presented.
