The study examined food security situation of female-headed households in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study identified livelihood activities of respondents, ascertained the food security situation, examined constraints to food security, and examined coping strategies of respondents. Multi-stage sampling procedure, snow ball and simple random techniques were used to select 72 female-headed households. Data were analyzed using mean score and factor analysis. Results showed that respondents livelihood activities included crop production (77.8%), processing and sale of palm produce (43.1%) and processing of farm produce (38.9%). Household food security situations included food secure to moderately food-insecure. Major constraints to food security of the respondents were poverty ( x̄ =2.52), lack of education and skill ( x̄ =2.50), poor rural infrastructure ( x̄ =2.50) and poor nutrition education ( x̄ =2.54). Coping strategies included restriction of food consumption of adults ( x̄ =2.21) reducing food consumption per day ( x̄ =2.00) and staying hungry ( x̄ =2.04). The study concludes that the households in the area were grossly food insecure as they spent more of their meager earning only on food. There was poor nutrition education and lack of productive skills. Poverty was found to be a major cause of food insecurity in the area as it robs people the option of fine choices. Hence, government and other development agencies should provide policies and efforts that assist Female headed households in capacity building like providing them with productive resources which will expand their scope of livelihood choices. The major purpose of the study is to determine the strategies for enhancing the communication skills of teachers in teaching agricultural science concept for food security in upper basic education. The study was carried out in Agbani Education Zone of Enugu State using a descriptive survey research method. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study to achieve the purposes of the study. The population for the study consisted of 70 respondents. There was no sampling because the entire population was manageable. Structured questionnaire were used for data collection, made up of 25 items. The instrument was validated by three experts and Cronbach Alpha statistic was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and a coefficient of 0.85 was obtained. A total of 708 copies of the questionnaire were distributed and returned. It was analyzed using weighted mean to answer the research questions and analysis of variance was used to answer the hypothesis of no significant difference. The findings of the study revealed among others that teachers‟ possessed communication skills like selecting appropriate medium, noting verbal and non-verbal reaction in the student, removing all forms of noise etc in low extent. Some strategies, such as supervision of teachers, provision of teaching aids, suitable laboratory and equipment, suitable time table, etc, could be used to enhance teachers‟ communication skills. Based on these findings, it was recommended that suitable time should be given to teaching of agricultural science lessons; there should be regular supervision of teachers; teachers should improvise teaching aids, among others, to ensure that students do not lose interest in agriculture for food security.

This study analysed the effect of social capital on food security status of rural farm households in Enugu state, Nigeria. Multistage random sampling technique was employed in collecting data from 180 farm households using structured interview schedule. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, food security index, Tobit regression and Pearson product moment correlation. Results showed that the farm households had mean monthly food expenditure/consumption of ₦14,600. Result of social capital dimensions showed that the farm households belonged to at least 2 associations and had cash contribution index of 68.01% and participated in two out of three decision making processes of their association. Result also showed that 58.33% of the farm households were relatively food secure. Result of Tobit regression analysis showed that cash contribution index, membership density index, association heterogeneity index and decision making index significantly influenced the rural farm households’ food security status. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between social capital and food security status of the farm households at 5% level. The study recommends that relevant agencies with mandate to enhance food security status of farm households should make policies aimed at promoting membership of farmers to local agricultural associations/cooperatives where opportunities for access to social capital abound.
