Abstract Background: Most people face low back pain problems at least once in their lifetimes. With the advancing technology, people have been consulting the internet regarding their diagnoses more and more over the last 20 years. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of YouTube videos on low back pain. Methods: The keyword “Low Back Pain” was used in our search on YouTube. The first 50 videos to come up in the search results were evaluated using JAMA, DISCERN, and GQS scoring systems. The individual correlation of each video and the correlation between the aforementioned scoring systems were statistically analyzed. Results: The average length of the 50 videos that were analyzed is 7,57 minutes (0,34 – 48,23 minutes), and the average daily view count of the videos is 331,14. Generally, video quality was found to be “poor”. On average, JAMA score was 1,64, DISCERN score was 1,63 and GQS score was 1,93. The most common videos found on the subject were those that were done by TV programs. And, videos by health information websites and by Hospitals / Doctors / Educational Institutions were, while still being below the threshold value, found to give higher quality information on the subject than the videos by other sources. Conclusion: Videos on YouTube regarding low back pain are of low quality, and most are created by unreliable sources. Therefore, such YouTube videos should not be recommended as patient education tools on low back pain. An important step in disseminating correct medical information to the public would be to have a platform where the accuracy and quality of given medical information are evaluated by medical experts.

The aim of this case report is to discuss the subject of acupuncture in pregnancy and which acupuncture points, or areas, are safe to needle. Low back pain in a 21-year-old Caucasian primigravida at 24 weeks gestation was incapacitating and acupuncture was offered. Prior to pregnancy investigations had excluded a serious organic cause and acupuncture was employed successfully to control pain and improve function. Acupuncture can be offered to sufferers of low back pain in pregnancy after risk / benefit analysis is undertaken and informed patient consent is obtained.

Background Access to guideline-consistent effective care for acute low back pain (ALBP) is generally regarded as limited. Researchers have recognized the potential of YouTube as a clinical and patient education resource that may improve access to appropriate care. However, the heterogeneity of evaluation approaches and variable quality of health information have generally limited the potential of YouTube as a self-management intervention. Objective This study aims to increase the understanding of ALBP content available on YouTube in 2020 and to establish the plausibility of using a simple checklist to facilitate the discovery of YouTube content consistent with current guidelines. We examined the following 4 research questions: how was the data set defined, what are the metadata characteristics of the videos in the data set, what is the information quality of ALBP YouTube videos, and what are the characteristics of the YouTube data set based on an ALBP self-management checklist? Methods This was an exploratory, qualitative infodemiology study. We identified videos in our data set through YouTube search based on popular ALBP-relevant search terms identified through Google Trends for YouTube. We accessed YouTube metadata using the YouTube data tools developed by the University of Amsterdam. We used a modified Brief DISCERN checklist to examine the information quality. We developed a checklist based on the 2018 Lancet Low Back Pain guidelines to examine self-management content. Results We analyzed a data set of 202 YouTube videos authored by chiropractors, physicians, physiotherapists, and instructors of yoga and other disciplines. We identified clear differences in the ALBP videos in our data set based on the authors’ disciplines. We found that the videos authored by each discipline strongly featured a specific intervention domain, that is, education, treatment, or exercise. We also found that videos authored by physicians were consistently coded with the highest ALBP self-management content scores than all other disciplines. Conclusions The results returned by YouTube in response to a search for back pain–related content were highly variable. We suggest that a simple checklist may facilitate the discovery of guideline-concordant ALBP self-management content on YouTube. Further research may identify the clinical contexts in which the use of an ALBP checklist with YouTube is feasible.

The sacroiliac joint, a multiplanar joint located in the dorsal complex of the pelvis, is one of the most important joints in the human to ensure upright and bipedal stability. The joint has been the subject of study for many years, but due to the presence of anatomic variability, challenges remain when analyzing its biomechanics in both normal and pathologic states. The joint is well vascularized and heavily innervated, making it a clinically significant structure with respect to primary, autoimmune, and traumatic disease processes. The chapter describes the gross anatomy of this joint as well as its embryologic origins, variability, and proposed movements as it relates to the joint’s potential for pathogenicity. This information will be useful to clinicians during diagnosis and radiographic evaluation of the patient with low back pain.

Objective To establish and evaluate the indicators of absenteeism for low back pain among municipal public servants of the city of Goiania in 2008 and 2009. Material and methods This is a descriptive, epidemiological, retrospective study. We used secondary data provided by the Municipal Medical Board of Goiânia. The sample was composed by active, statutory and commissioned civil servants of the executive branch, of both sexes, who took sick leaves for health care in the period from January 2008 to December 2009. We analyzed all cases of sick leave for health care which were taken for a period of more than 3 days and caused by low back pain. Frequency and severity indexes, proportion of lost time and average length of absences were calculated. The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results 625 sick leaves were analyzed. In 2008, 32% of public servants took sick leave for health care. 2.83% of these leaves were for low back pain, generating 3541 days of absence. In 2009, the total percentage of sick leaves was 30%. 5.38% of these were due to low back pain, leading to 6890 lost working days. The indicators of absenteeism for 2008 and 2009 were, respectively: frequency index = 0.009 and 0.015; severity index = 0.14 and 0.26, proportion of lost time = 13.89% and 27.34%; average length of absences = 16.39 and 16.84 days. Conclusion The results indicate the need for the creation of intervention policies on work organization, since low back pain is a disorder that can be prevented at the primary level.
