Thermal stability, adhesion and electronic resistivity of the Cu alloy films with diffusion barrier elements (large atom Sn and small atom C) have been studied. Ternary Cu (0.6 at.% Sn, 2 at.% C) films were prepared by magnetron co-sputtering in this work. The microstructure and resistivity analysis on the films showed that the Cu (0.6 at.% Sn, 2 at.% C) film had better adhesion with the substrate and lower resistivity (2.8 μΩ·cm, after annealing at 600 °C for 1 h). Therefore, the doping of carbon atoms makes less effect to the resistivity by decreasing the amount of the doped large atoms, which results in the decreasing of the whole resistivity of the barrierless structure. After annealing, the doped elements in the film diffused to the interface to form self-passivated amorphous layer, which could further hinder the diffusion between Cu and Si. So thus ternary Cu (0.6 at.% Sn, 2 at.% C) film had better diffusion barrier effect. Co-doping of large atoms and small atoms in the Cu film is a promising way to improve the barrierless structure.

AbstractCold atom experiments often use images of the atom clouds as their exclusive source of experimental information. The most commonly used technique is absorption imaging, which provides accurate information about the shapes of the atom clouds, but requires care when seeking the absolute atom number for small atom samples. In this paper, we present an independent, absolute calibration of the atom numbers. We directly compare the atom number detected using dark-ground imaging to the one observed by fluorescence imaging of the same atoms in a magneto-optical trap. We normalise the signal using single-atom resolved fluorescence imaging. In order to be able to image the absorption of the very low atom numbers involved, we use diffractive dark-ground imaging as a novel, ultra-sensitive method of in situ imaging for untrapped atom clouds down to only 100 atoms. We demonstrate that the Doppler shift due to the acceleration of the atoms by the probe beam has to be taken into account when measuring the atom-number.

This paper owes much to the ideas, insights and inspiration of a group of people brought together in Mexico City in August 1975 at the behest of the World Council of Churches for a consultation on the Christian Faith and the Changing Face of Science and Technology. I have drawn freely on their written papers and their report (published in Anticipation No. 22) believing that this important work needs to be interpreted and made much more widely known. I have also drawn on the fertile ideas of a number of British scientists and philosophers, notably Sir Bernard Lovell the astronomer, and Professor Derek Bryce-Smith the chemist, who have given us, from their studies of the incomprehensibly vast universe and the infinitesimally small atom, a picture of a universe with a truly remarkable property: the ability to produce life.
