Drilling can help researchers to garner a better understanding of earthquakes. The way to do this is to drill at least 5km below the sea floor. Rock samples can be gathered and tested, which can provide answers to a whole host of unknowns. This work can lead to important breakthroughs that enable scientists to better understand the earthquake mechanism, and enables a better forecasting seismic hazards across the globe. Masa Kinoshita is part of a highly collaborative team 'NanTroSEIZE' under the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), comprising more than 200 researchers from different countries. He is working on a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science-funded project entitled 'Urgency Evaluation of the Nankai Great Earthquake and Tsunami by Scientific Ocean Drilling' (lead by Gaku Kimura) that is seeking to estimate the earthquake likelihood of a severe Nankai Trough earthquake. Experts predict that there is a 70 to 80 per cent possibility that a so-called 'Nankai Trough megaquake' with a magnitude of 8 to 9 will occur in the next 30 years. The goal of the project is to establish better understanding of the state and properties of the Nankai seismogenic zone, and better assess the urgency of the predicted megaquake.

The Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) is a major long-term drilling project designed to investigate the seismogenic behavior of subduction zone plate boundaries. Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 332 deployed a long-term borehole monitoring system (LTBMS), an advanced Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kit (CORK)-type observatory. The recovery of pressure and temperature data from a temporary observatory (SmartPlug) deployed during IODP Expedition 319 helped prove the SmartPlug concept. The permanent LTBMS was deployed n the upper 1000 m of Site C0002, while the SmartPlug was recovered from Site C0010 and replaced with a more capable "GeniusPlug", incorporating an extension with a geochem-ical sampler and biological experiment to the original SmartPlug design. SmartPlug pressure and temperature data showed signs of transient pressure events.

doi:10.2204/iodp.sd.14.04.2012

Abstract The VOLCORE (Volcanic Core Records) database is a collection of 34,696 visible tephra (volcanic ash and lithological or grain size variations) occurrences reported in the initial reports volumes of all of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP; 1966–1983), the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP; 1983–2003), the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP; 2003–2013) and the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP; 2013-present) up to and including IODP Expedition 381. The combined international ocean drilling programmes (OD) have locations with global coverage. Cored tephra layers and tephra-bearing sediments span timescales from recent to ~150 million years in age. This database is a collection of information about reported visible tephra layers entirely or predominantly composed of volcanic ash. Data include the depth below sea floor, tephra thickness, location, and any reported comments. An approximate age was estimated for most (29,493) of the tephra layers using published age-depth models. The database can be used as a starting point for studies of tephrochronology, volcanology, geochemistry, studies of sediment transport and palaeoclimatology.
