Among New World direct-developing frogs belonging to the clade Brachycephaloidea (= Terraranae), there are several genera with uncertain phylogenetic placements. One notable example is the genus Niceforonia Goin & Cochran 1963, which includes three species that are endemic to Colombia. Three specimens of the species Niceforonia nana were collected and for the first time the genus is included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (mtDNA; 12S and 16S) and nuclear (nucDNA; TYR and RAG1) markers. Molecular phylogenetic inference based on concatenated and separate mtDNA and nucDNA analyses recovered Niceforonia nana nested within Hypodactylus Hedges et al. 2008, rendering the latter genus paraphyletic. Consequently, herein we place the genus Hypodactylus in the synonymy of Niceforonia to resolve the paraphyly and place Niceforonia in the subfamily Hypodactylinae. Based on our revised concept of the genus Niceforonia we conducted preliminary morphological comparisons using specimens and literature descriptions. Finally, Nicefornia nana is quite divergent from other species of Niceforonia (uncorrected genetic distances of ca. 10% 16S and 7% TYR) suggesting that further taxonomic revision may be warranted.

The 35 previously described species (including 4 junior synonyms) of the New World erythroneurine leafhopper genus Zyginama are reviewed and descriptions are provided for 43 new species, 2 from U.S.A., 26 from Mexico, 1 from Panama, and 14 from the Amazon region of South America. The following new synonyms are recognized: Z. aucta (McAtee) equals Erythroneura bilocularis Van Duzee, syn. n., and E. inclita Beamer, syn. n.; Z. nicholi (Beamer) equals E. canyonensis Beamer, syn. n., and E. ales Beamer, syn. n. Separate keys are provided for identification of males from North and South America, all known species are illustrated, and data on their distributions are summarized. Phylogenetic analysis of 40 morphological characters of the 71 species for which males are known yielded a reasonably well resolved estimate of relationships among the included species, but branch support was low overall.

The genus Rhadinaea is a diverse clade of New World dipsadid snakes, with 22 species arranged in six recognized species groups. The most recently described species, Rhadinaea eduardoi, was described based on a unique specimen collected in the Santa Catarina Juquila municipality in the Sierra Madre del Sur of southern Oaxaca, Mexico. Here, based on a reexamination of the holotype and the results of a phylogenetic analysis of the holotype of Rhadinaea eduardoi and representatives of several genera closely related to Rhadinaea, we reassessed the generic assignment of Rhadinaea eduardoi. In our phylogenetic hypothesis, R. eduardoi was nested within a strongly supported clade of Coniophanes fissidens samples, thus making Rhadinaea paraphyletic with respect to Coniophanes. Additionally, our reexamination of the holotype of Rhadinaea eduardoi revealed that the alleged presence of a subpreocular scale is only true on the right side of the head, and that this scale appears to be a malformed preocular scale; also, a reduction in dorsal scale rows is present; and posterior enlarged maxillary teeth are grooved. Herein we consider that Rhadinaea eduardoi should be placed in the synonymy of Coniophanes fissidens. Consequently, we recognized only five species groups within the genus Rhadinaea.

The New World species of the curtonotid genus Curtonotum Macquart are reviewed, and all species outside the vulpinum and murinum species complexes (as defined below) are revised. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for 24 species, including 13 newly described species: C. adusticrus sp. n., C. atlanticum sp. n., C. bivittatum sp. n., C. brunneum sp. n., C. curtispinum sp. n., C. desperatum sp. n., C. papillatum sp. n., C. gracile sp. n., C. hunkingi sp. n., C. flavisetum sp. n., C. floridense sp. n., C. nigrum sp. n., and C. scambum sp. n. Curtonotum nigripalpe Hendel is proposed as a new junior synonym of C. hendelianum (Enderlein). A key to these New World species is presented and the phylogenetic relationships between them are discussed. Lectotypes are designated for C. tumidum Enderlein, C. bathmedum Hendel, C. taeniatum Hendel, C. trypetipenne Hendel, C. impunctatum Hendel, 1913, nec impunctatum Hendel, 1932 and C. apicale Hendel. Curtonotum perplexum nom. n., is given as the replacement name for C. impunctatum Hendel, 1932 nec impunctatum Hendel, 1913. Two species complexes are left untreated at the species level (the C. murinum species complex, including C. murinum Hendel, C. coriaceum Hendel, C. perplexum nom. n., and C. decumanum Bezzi; and the C. vulpinum species complex including C. vulpinum Hendel and C. fumipenne Hendel). Both complexes are included in the phylogenetic analysis and key.
