AbstractPopulations of larvae of the bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata Wlk., in four physiographic regions of Manitoba showed similar trends over time: a decline from the outbreak of 1971–1972 to very low densities in 1975–1977, an increase to a peak during the years 1979–1981, and a subsequent decline. During the period of peak larval populations, brief (1 or 2 years) outbreaks [at least some fields with > 20 larvae per square metre) occurred at five locations in two regions, the Swan River Plain and the Valley River Plain, but not in the Western Uplands or the Manitoba Lowlands. In the first two regions, larval densities rose rapidly (from < 1.6 to > 13.8/m2) in 1 year. Although the general trend of population density was similar, there were differences in density among and within regions, and in the timing, severity, and duration of peak populations. Two parasitoids (Banchus flavescens Cress., Athrycia cinerea (Coq.)) and two pathogens (a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) and fungi of the Entomophthorales) occurred regularly in larval populations. Of these, B. flavescens had the highest constancy among collections and may help to keep bertha armyworm populations at low densities. NPV was rarely found among larvae from low-density populations but appeared in all populations that reached outbreak levels. No single biotic agent could be associated with the population declines because of multiple parasitism and the difficulty in partitioning mortality when only a single sample could be taken. The rapid increase of bertha armyworm larvae from very low to outbreak levels in 1 year will prevent predictions of outbreaks from being based on larval densities in the preceding year.

A morph-frequency cline and a size cline are described for the snail Velacumantus australis. The frequency of a white-banded form decreases clinally with latitude South. Living populations from Queensland and northern New South Wales have frequencies between 7 and 18% whereas all populations from southern New South Wales and eastern Victoria, except those from Lake Illawarra, have frequencies between 2 and 5%. The frequency in Port Phillip Bay is less than 0.1%. The frequency in a sample from Swan River, Western Australia, was 9.1% about the same as in samples from localities of the same latitude on the eastern coast of Australia. The frequency in most fossil samples was similar to that in nearby living populations. The mean length of populations from the eastern states increases clinally with increase in latitude South, although there are some irregular fluctuations between adjacent populations which are probably influenced by population density.

During 1993-94 the phytoplankton community in the upper Swan River estuary had a peak chlorophyll a concentration of 57 mg m-3 during early summer (December 1993) and a second peak of 35 mg m-3 during late autumn (May 1994). Mid summer was characterized by low cell densities and low chlorophyll a concentrations. The potential of the phytoplankton community for nutrient limitation was assessed with dilution bioassays given nutrient mixes deficient in one of the following: nitrogen, phosphate, silicate, iron, trace metals, chelators, or vitamins. During the mid-summer period of low phytoplankton abundance, nitrogen was the nutrient with the greatest potential to limit algal biomass. During mid summer, ambient N:P ratios tended to be near unity and bioassays indicated that the available pool of N was up to 20 times more limiting to biomass development than was available P. Also during mid summer, bioassay treatments given no nitrogen and control treatments given no nutrients showed little growth, reaching chlorophyll a concentrations -1/30th of those given a full suite of nutrients. Chlorophyll a concentrations in the bioassay control treatments given no nutrients were correlated (r2 = 0.74) with measured surface nitrate concentrations; this suggested that nitrate inputs may be a major factor controlling phytoplankton biomass in this ecosystem. The correlation between surface nitrate concentration and rainfall (r2 = 0.69) further suggests that rainfall may be the most important mechanism supplying nitrate to the surface waters of this estuary.
