AbstractThe present study aims to assess the extent of trace metal pollution in the sediments of Sita-Swarna estuary, west coast of India, and investigate their possible ecological risk on the aquatic environment. The sediment cores were analyzed for sand, silt, clay, organic carbon, and trace metals (Al, Fe, Mn, As, Cd, Co, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Cu) at 2-cm intervals. The study revealed that sediments have deposited in relatively violent to very violent hydrodynamic energy conditions. Factor analysis indicated that the metal distribution is mainly controlled by Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides and organic carbon. Further, the geochemical approach, pollution indices, and statistical evaluation revealed moderate pollution in the catchment. From an ecotoxicological perspective, the estimated risk index (RI) value was found to less than 150, indicating low risk for aquatic life. Thus, this baseline study would help to adopt strategies in pollution control and protect the fragile marine environment.

The small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis, is a keystone species in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, with significant impacts on the regional ecosystem, but has experienced decades of population decline as a result of environmental changes and overfishing. The settlement of post-larval L. polyactis is a period of high mortality, with impacts on population recruitment and survival. This study examines the feeding habits of 49 post-larval and early juvenile L. polyactis in the Yangtze River estuary, in order to reveal diet composition before and after the settlement period. DNA barcoding methods (MiSeq and TA cloning) were used to examine gastrointestinal contents in detail. Both methods revealed that dietary breadth increased with increasing body length, while the dominance of copepods in the diet decreased as the body length increased. Post-larva (body length < 17 mm in this study) primarily fed on copepods. At the beginning of settlement (body length between 17 and 19 mm), L. polyactis began to ingest larger organisms, such as fishes and mysids, along with copepods. Larger early juveniles (body length > 20 mm) demonstrated a much wider dietary breadth, implying that successful settlement had occurred. Diet species richness in the MiSeq group was significantly greater than species richness in the TA cloning group, making the trend more pronounced within the MiSeq group. This indicates that the MiSeq method was more efficient than TA cloning in this study. We recommend that future research to investigate the feeding habits of fish larvae should combine MiSeq and visual examination methods.

Abstract Baiyangdian Lake is a typical and largest multi-habitat lake in the North plain of China. To understand the generation and transmission of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in multi-habitat lakes, the contents of nutrients (TC, TOC, TN, TP and TS), heavy metals (Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, As, Cd and Hg), 22 antibiotics, 16S-rRNA(16S), Class I integron (intI1) and 20 ARGs were determined. Samples were taken from the Fuhe river, river estuaries, reed marshes, living area, fish poods and open water of Baiyangdian Lake. The results showed that quinolones (QNs) were the main pollutants, and the content range was ND-104.94 ng/g. Thereinto, aac (6') -IB, blaTEM-1, ermF, qnrA, qnrD, tetG, sul1, sul2 and tetM were detected in 100%. The absolute abundance of sul1 was the highest (5.25×105copies/g-6.21×107 copies/g), which was the dominant ARGs. In these different habitats, the abundance of antibiotics and ARGs in river estuary was the highest, and that in reed marshes was the lowest. There was a significant positive correlation between the abundance of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, Hg) and the absolute abundance of 11 ARGs (P<0.01). Redundancy analysis showed that Cu, Zn, intI1, TP and macrolides (MLs) were the important factors affecting the distribution of ARGs. Our findings provides a more likely driving and influencing factor for the transmission of ARGs in lakes with complex and diverse habitats.

Distributions of Coomassie Blue stainable particles (CSP), the sources and transports, as well as their implications for nitrogen biogeochemical cycles in the Pearl River estuary (PRE) were investigated during two cruises in August 2016 and January 2017. CSPcolor concentrations (CSP concentration determined spectrophotometrically) were 73.7–685.3 μg BSA eq L–1 [μg Bovine serum albumin (BSA) equivalent liter–1] in August 2016 and 100.6–396.4 μg BSA eq L–1 in January 2017, respectively. CSP concentrations were high in low-salinity waters (&lt;5), and declined from the river to the middle estuary by 80% in the wet season and 55.6% in the dry season, respectively, then increased again in the lower estuary due to high primary production. CSP concentrations were mainly associated with chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration except for the turbid mixing zone, suggesting that autochthonous phytoplankton production served as the primary source of CSP in the PRE. The concentrations of nitrogen (N) as CSP in the PRE were comparable to the nitrogen content of particulate hydrolysable amino acids (PHAA). Pictures of CSP taken by microscopy and the correlation between composition of PHAA and the ratio of Chl a/CSPcolor showed that CSP were relatively degraded due to delivery of old terrestrial protein to river section and extensive microbial degradation during mixing at the upper and middle parts of the estuary, whereas CSP in lower estuary appeared to be more labile due to higher fresh algal production. The contribution of CSP nitrogen (CSP-N) to the particulate nitrogen (PN) pool was 34.98% in summer and 30.8% in winter. The conservative estimate of CSP-N input flux in the Pearl River Delta was about 6 × 106 mol N d–1. These results suggested that CSP was a significant pool of organic nitrogen in the PRE. The study of CSP composition in terms of nitrogen provides new insight into the roles of CSP on nitrogen biogeochemical processes in the turbid and productive estuarine system.

Abstract The riverine ecosystem is beholden by the freshwater; however, morphological changes and sediment load destabilize the natural river system which deteriorates the ecology and geomorphology of the river ecosystem. The Lower Indus River Estuary (LIRE) geomorphological response was synthesized using satellite imagery (1986–2020) and evaluated against the field measurements. The estuary sinuosity index has an increasing trend from 1.84 (1986) to 1.92 (2020) and the estuary water area is increased from 101.41 km2 (1986) to 110.24 km2 (2020). The sediment load investigation at Kotri barrage indicated that the median size of bed material samples during the low-flow period falls between 0.100 and 0.203 mm and the bed material after the high flow has clay and silt (&lt;0.0623 mm) ranging from 17–95% of the total weight of samples. The vegetated land loss on the banks is positively correlated with the peak runoff at Kotri barrage (r2=0.92). The bank erosion was computed with high precision (r2=0.84) based on an improved connection of the coefficient of erodibility and excess shear stress technique. This study will be helpful for policymakers to estimate the ecological health of LIRE, and sediment fluxes play an essential role in the mega-delta system and coastal management.

Suaeda salsa (S. salsa) is an important ecological barrier and tourism resource in coastal wetland resources, and assessing changes in its health is beneficial for protecting the ecological health of wetlands and increasing finances. The aim was to explore improvements in the degradation of S. salsa communities in the Liao River Estuary National Nature Reserve since a wetland restoration project was carried out in Panjin, Liaoning Province, China, in 2015. In this study, landscape changes in the reserve were assessed based on Sentinel-2 images classification results from 2016 to 2019. A pressure-state-response framework was constructed to assess the annual degradation of S. salsa communities within the wetlands. The assessment results show that the area of S. salsa communities and water bodies decreased annually from 2016 to 2019, and the increased degradation indicators indicate a state of continued degradation. The area of types such as aquaculture ponds and Phragmites australis communities did not change much, while the estuarine mudflats increased year by year. The causes of S. salsa community degradation include anthropogenic impacts from abandoned aquaculture ponds and sluice control systems but also natural impacts from changes in the tidal amplitude and soil properties of the mudflats. The results also indicate that the living conditions of S. salsa in the Liao River estuary wetlands are poor and that anthropogenic disturbance is necessary to restore the original vegetation abundance.
