ABSTRACT Objective:  To describe an orthodontic treatment that combines an esthetic approach (clear aligners) with surgery (alveolar corticotomy). Materials and Methods:  A patient with moderate dental crowding and Class I skeletal and molar relationships was selected. Orthodontic records of the patient were taken. Periodontal indexes, oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL), and treatment time were evaluated. After we reflected a full-thickness flap beyond the teeth apices, the cortical bone was exposed on the buccal aspect and a modified corticotomy procedure was performed. Interproximal corticotomy cuts were extended through the entire thickness of the cortical layer, just barely penetrating into medullary bone. Orthodontic force was applied on the teeth immediately after surgery. Results:  Total treatment time was 2 months. Periodontal indexes were improved after correction of crowding. A deterioration of OHRQoL was limited to 3 days following surgery. Conclusion:  This case report may encourage the use, limited to selected cases, of corticotomy associated with clear aligners to treat moderate crowding.

The therapy of patients with Crouzon syndrome involves a multidisciplinary team. In most cases, this therapy is extensive, time-consuming, and exhausting for the patient. This case report illustrates a temporally coordinated therapy plan that succeeds in reducing the burden of care. Showing typical extraoral characteristics of Crouzon syndrome, the patient had a frontal and left-sided crossbite, and impaction of the maxillary canines. Multidisciplinary therapy included the extraction of multiple teeth, midface distraction at Le Fort III level, and alignment of the impacted teeth. Before starting, during, and after completion of the treatment, the patient’s oral health-related quality of life was assessed using COHIP-19. The combination of different treatment steps significantly reduced the duration of therapy. The therapy improved not only the patient’s oro- and craniofacial function, but also the patient’s facial appearance in a short treatment period. The patient’s quality of life improved considerably during this time. In the treatment of severe craniofacial anomalies, the highest priority should be given to keeping the burden of care low. All measures should encourage young patients’ appropriate psychosocial development despite extensive therapies, ensuring at the same time medically satisfactory treatment results.

Objective. To evaluate the combined use of IMSS preventive health services (PHS) and the practice of physical activity (PA) in order to determine their association with the perceived health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of older adults. Materials and methods. A survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted at nine primary health care units (PHCUs) in Mexico City. The 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey evaluated the HRQoL, while PA and PHS use were assessed through self-report. Linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between these three variables. Results. Of the 1 085 older adults who participated in the study, 36.8% used PHS, and 23.3% reported that they engage in PA. After controlling for possible effects due to sociodemographic and health differences, we found that participants who were physically active and used PHS reported better perceived HRQoL scores. Conclusions. The combined use of preventive practices such as the use of PHS and the practice of PA can help improve the perceived HRQoL of older adults.

Correction of a severe bimaxillary protrusion with maximum anchorage can be challenging. This case report describes the treatment of a girl with a bimaxillary protrusion. Orthodontic treatment included extraction of her 4 first premolars. The total treatment time was 18 months. Her dental proclination and facial appearance was significantly improved.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world. As China enters the aging society, elderly breast cancer presents the characteristics of high incidence, late detection and long treatment time. This is related to the imperfect services that elderly women receive in the treatment and rehabilitation. Eventually, the HRQOL (health-related quality of life) in their later years has declined. By using service design tools, the authors conducted field research and in-depth interviews in Shanghai hospitals and developed service strategy to improve the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in the treatment and rehabilitation of elderly women with breast cancer. The paper presents three design contents: (1) smart healthcare service system; (2) improvement of service scenarios in the hospital; (3) a life-long service that links communities, families, and individuals to transform breast cancer into "chronic disease". In this paper, the authors also discuss the next step and prospects.
