Background. Although rare, pregnant women can present with fibroepithelial polyps of the vagina. Most likely hormonally related, these polyps have been described in various locations of the lower female genital tract. They can be mistaken for malignant lesions due to hypercellularity and cytologic atypia. Case. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who presented with a polyp of the vagina during a postpartum visit. Results. Atypical cells were seen in hypercellular areas of the stroma of the polyp. Conclusion. A pitfall to avoid is classifying these benign lesions as malignant based on atypical histopathology.

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the utility of the Healthy Start Screen (HSS), which is an assessment of health, environment, and behavioral risk factors offered to all pregnant women in the state of Florida, in identifying women at risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD).MethodsThe sample for this Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved, retrospective study consisted of patients who presented to a women’s clinic for a new prenatal visit. Those patients who completed both the HSS at their prenatal visit and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at their postpartum visit were included. We focused on items 1–10 of the HSS, where patients could respond with either “yes” or “no”, and identified a positive EPDS as any score greater than or equal to 12.ResultsWomen who identified as feeling down, depressed or hopeless, feeling alone when facing problems, to having ever received mental health services, or to having any trouble paying bills were more likely to have an EPDS score greater than or equal to 12.ConclusionThe HSS, currently mandated by the state of Florida to be offered to all pregnant women, is a useful tool for identifying women at increased risk of developing PPD.

This study was aimed to explore women’s and midwives’ views on the use of mobile technology in supporting obese pregnant women with healthy lifestyle choices. A purposive sample of 14 women and midwives participated in four focus groups in Doncaster, UK. A content analysis of the transcripts from the first focus group led to the emergence of three main constructs with associated subcategories including Benefits (“modernising,” “motivating,” “reminding,” and “reducing” the sense of isolation), Risks and Limitations (possibility of “being offensive,” “creating pressure or guilt,” and “being influenced by mood”), and Service Delivery (making it “available to all pregnant women,” giving attention to the “message tone” and development of “message content”). They also suggested the use of other modalities such as web-based services for weight management during pregnancy. Based on the above results a text messaging service was developed and presented to the 2nd focus group participants who confirmed the positive views from the first focus group on the use of the text messaging as being supportive and informative. The participants also welcomed “women’s engagement and choice” in deciding the content, timing and frequency of messages. The results informed the development of a text messaging service to support maternal obesity management. The implementation and acceptability of this service requires further investigation.

This was a descriptive, exploratory, documental study of trends that aimed to analyze process indicators in the Program for Humanization of Prenatal Care and Childbirth in Ceará State, Brazil, from 2001 to 2006. The authors analyzed data from 312,507 pregnant women. In 2001, the year the program was implemented in the State, the system tabulated data for three of the seven process indicators; beginning in 2002, all indicators were tabulated. Total enrollment of pregnant women was the only indicator that increased every year until 2006, while the other indicators increased from 2002 until 2005, but declined from 2005 to 2006. When combining the completion of six prenatal visits with a postpartum visit, routine laboratory tests, or both, the percentages declined. Tetanus immunization reached the highest percentage in 2002 (68.34%), decreasing to 60.86% in 2006. The combination of six prenatal visits, a postpartum visit, laboratory tests, tetanus immunization, and HIV test was the indicator with the lowest percentage for the State (15.67%), although it was higher than the national average. Even considering flaws in the use of the Prenatal Care Information System, it is unacceptable that prenatal care still lacks complete coverage for such basic elements as routine laboratory tests and tetanus immunization.
