Breast cancer is a disease that occurs most often in female cancer patients. Early detection can significantly reduce the mortality rate. Microwave breast imaging, which is noninvasive and harmless to human, offers a promising alternative method to mammography. This paper presents a review of recent advances in microwave imaging for breast cancer detection. We conclude by introducing new research on a microwave imaging system with time-domain measurement that achieves short measurement time and low system cost. In the time-domain measurement system, scan time would take less than 1 sec, and it does not require very expensive equipment such as VNA.

Previous studies have shown that microwave imaging offers an alternative or additional way for early diagnosis of breast cancer. Microwave antenna plays an important role in a microwave imaging system. The paper presents a wideband microwave antenna for medical microwave breast imaging application. Various simulations were conducted to validate the proposed antenna. Results show that the proposed antenna has the potential for application in a microwave imaging system to identify breast lesions.

Advances in breast imaging over the last 15 years have improved early breast cancer detection and management. After treatment for breast cancer, many women choose to have reconstructive surgery. In addition, with the availability of widespread genetic screening for breast cancer, an increasing number of women are choosing prophylactic mastectomies and subsequent breast reconstruction. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to present the spectrum of imaging findings in the reconstructed breast.

Microwave imaging (MI) has been considered as an alternative way to X-ray mammography for breast cancer detection. This paper presents a compressive sensing based holographic microwave imaging (CS-HMI) approach for diagnosing of breast cancer. A numerical imaging system is developed to validate the proposed CS-HMI approach, which includes a realistic human breast phantom and measurement model. Small breast tumour can be detected in the reconstructed CS-HMI image via Split Bregman (SB) with using 10% measurement data. Simulation and experimental results show that CS-HMI has the ability to produce high quality image by using significantly less measurement data and operation time.
