It is shown that the dilatational terms that need to be modelled in compressible turbulence include not only the pressure-dilatation term but also another term - the compressible dissipation. The nature of the compressible velocity field, which generates these dilatational terms, is explored by asymptotic analysis of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the case of homogeneous turbulence. The lowest-order equations for the compressible field are solved and explicit expressions for some of the associated one-point moments are obtained. For low Mach numbers, the compressible mode has a fast timescale relative to the incompressible mode. Therefore, it is proposed that, in moderate Mach number homogeneous turbulence, the compressible component of the turbulence is in quasi-equilibrium with respect to the incompressible turbulence. A non-dimensional parameter which characterizes this equilibrium structure of the compressible mode is identified. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of isotropic, compressible turbulence are performed, and their results are found to be in agreement with the theoretical analysis. A model for the compressible dissipation is proposed; the model is based on the asymptotic analysis and the direct numerical simulations. This model is calibrated with reference to the DNS results regarding the influence of compressibility on the decay rate of isotropic turbulence. An application of the proposed model to the compressible mixing layer has shown that the model is able to predict the dramatically reduced growth rate of the compressible mixing layer.

The Impact

Parametric direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent premixed flames burning methane in the thin reaction zone regime have been performed relying on complex physicochemical models and taking into account volume viscosity (κ). The combined effect of increasing turbulence intensities (u′) andκon the resulting flame structure is investigated. The turbulent flame structure is marred with numerous perforations and edge flame structures appearing within the burnt gas mixture at various locations, shapes and sizes. Stepping upu′from 3 to 12 m/s leads to an increase in the scaled integrated heat release rate from 2 to 16. This illustrates the interest of combustion in a highly turbulent medium in order to obtain high volumetric heat release rates in compact burners. Flame thickening is observed to be predominant at high turbulent Reynolds number. Via ensemble averaging, it is shown that both laminar and turbulent flame structures are not modified byκ. These findings are in opposition to previous observations for flames burning hydrogen, where significant modifications induced byκwere found for both the local and global properties of turbulent flames. Therefore, to save computational resources, we suggest that the volume viscosity transport term be ignored for turbulent combustion DNS at low Mach numbers when burning hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract A radiatively driven cloud-top mixing layer is investigated using direct numerical simulations. This configuration mimics the mixing process across the inversion that bounds the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer. The main focus of this paper is on small-scale turbulence. The finest resolution (7.4 cm) is about two orders of magnitude finer than that in cloud large-eddy simulations (LES). A one-dimensional horizontally averaged model is employed for the radiation. The results show that the definition of the inversion point with the mean buoyancy of 〈b〉(zi) = 0 leads to convective turbulent scalings in the cloud bulk consistent with the Deardorff theory. Three mechanisms contribute to the entrainment by cooling the inversion layer: a molecular flux, a turbulent flux, and the direct radiative cooling by the smoke inside the inversion layer. In the simulations the molecular flux is negligible, but the direct cooling reaches values comparable to the turbulent flux as the inversion layer thickens. The results suggest that the direct cooling might be overestimated in less-resolved models like LES, resulting in an excessive entrainment. The scaled turbulent flux is independent of the stratification for the range of Richardson numbers studied here. As suggested by earlier studies, the turbulent entrainment only occurs at the small scales and eddies larger than approximately four optical lengths (60 m in a typical stratocumulus cloud) perform little or no entrainment. Based on those results, a parameterization is proposed that accounts for a large part (50%–100%) of the entrainment velocities measured in the Second Dynamics and Chemistry of the Marine Stratocumulus (DYCOMS II) campaign.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are conducted of a model hydrocarbon–nitrogen mixing layer under supercritical conditions. The temporally developing mixing layer configuration is studied using heptane and nitrogen supercritical fluid streams at a pressure of 60 atm as a model system related to practical hydrocarbon-fuel/air systems. An entirely self-consistent cubic Peng–Robinson equation of state is used to describe all thermodynamic mixture variables, including the pressure, internal energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, and speed of sound along with additional terms associated with the generalized heat and mass transport vectors. The Peng–Robinson formulation is based on pure-species reference states accurate to better than 1% relative error through comparisons with highly accurate state equations over the range of variables used in this study (600 [les ] T [les ] 1100 K, 40 [les ] p [les ] 80 atm) and is augmented by an accurate curve fit to the internal energy so as not to require iterative solutions. The DNS results of two-dimensional and three-dimensional layers elucidate the unique thermodynamic and mixing features associated with supercritical conditions. Departures from the perfect gas and ideal mixture conditions are quantified by the compression factor and by the mass diffusion factor, both of which show reductions from the unity value. It is found that the qualitative aspects of the mixing layer may be different according to the specification of the thermal diffusion factors whose value is generally unknown, and the reason for this difference is identified by examining the second-order statistics: the constant Bearman–Kirkwood (BK) thermal diffusion factor excites fluctuations that the constant Irwing–Kirkwood (IK) one does not, and thus enhances overall mixing. Combined with the effect of the mass diffusion factor, constant positive large BK thermal diffusion factors retard diffusional mixing, whereas constant moderate IK factors tend to promote diffusional mixing. Constant positive BK thermal diffusion factors also tend to maintain density gradients, with resulting greater shear and vorticity. These conclusions about IK and BK thermal diffusion factors are species-pair dependent, and therefore are not necessarily universal. Increasing the temperature of the lower stream to approach that of the higher stream results in increased layer growth as measured by the momentum thickness. The three-dimensional mixing layer exhibits slow formation of turbulent small scales, and transition to turbulence does not occur even for a relatively long non-dimensional time when compared to a previous, atmospheric conditions study. The primary reason for this delay is the initial density stratification of the flow, while the formation of strong density gradient regions both in the braid and between-the-braid planes may constitute a secondary reason for the hindering of transition through damping of emerging turbulent eddies.
