This randomized clinical study aimed at quantifying the gingival displacement performance in the vertical and horizontal directions of the 3M™ Astringent Retraction Paste (3M Oral Care, Seefeld, Germany) in comparison with the double-cord technique with aluminum chloride as an astringent. Afterward, any soft-tissue changes were assessed for 12 months. After inducing mild gingivitis, 18 probands received the intervention ‘cord’ and 22 probands received the intervention ‘paste’ at the palatal half of upper premolars prior to conventional impression making. The resulting plaster casts were digitized and analyzed for the vertical and horizontal gingival displacement, applying a newly developed computer-assisted methodology. The entire palatal half of the tooth was evaluated instead of only single sites. Under the condition of mild gingivitis, the gingival displacement performance was comparable for both techniques in the horizontal direction (width) and only somewhat better for the cord technique in the vertical direction (depth). The magnitude of displacement was in a similar range in both directions, with somewhat higher values in the vertical direction. The marginal gingiva height changes were of such low extent during the follow-up period of 12 months with only minimally higher values for the paste that they cannot be considered as clinically relevant recessions.

In patients with rotationplasty the biomechanical conditions in the ankle joint are altered dramatically. By displacement and reduction of the weight-bearing area of the joint, the stress affecting its cartilage is increased. The use of an exoprothesis results in skin and soft tissue irritation. Due to these biomechanical changes, a prearthrotic deformity or skin problems could be expected. The current study examines changes in 21 patients treated with rotationplasty (mean follow-up 13.5 years) because of a malignant bone tumour or a femoral segmental defect. Local tenderness, skin and soft tissue changes, problems with exoprostheses, and pain was assessed by clinical examination and documented. Osseous changes were evaluated by plain X-ray. A MRI-scan was also obtained in five patients. Hardened skin and blisters were located at the main loading areas of the rotated foot. These changes could be reduced by optimizing the exoprosthetic fit. Radiographically, a slight asymptomatic attenuation of the articular space was observed in four patients and a slight coexistent subchondral sclerosis with small osteophytes in one patient. No degenerative changes were observed on X-ray and no cartilaginous changes were observed on MRI. The results suggest that the foot is able to adapt to the load changes after this procedure and that rotationplasty does not cause an inevitable arthrosis in the ankle joint.

Aim: To study the skeletal, dental effects and evaluate the soft tissue changes with PowerScope-fixed functional appliance in class II malocclusion. Materials and methods: This clinical study was carried out where a total of 10 growing (CVMS 3 and 4) Class II Division 1 malocclusion patients, indicated for treatment with fixed functional appliance were allocated based on specific inclusion criteria. PowerScope (American Orthodontics) was used as the fixed functional appliance. Skeletal, dental and soft tissue effects of the appliance with various angular and linear parameters on a digital lateral cephalogram were evaluated for all 10 participants. Records were collected before the insertion of PowerScope appliance (T0) and after 5 months, during the appliance removal (T1). All participants were treated with 0.018ʺ×0.025ʺ MBT (3M Unitek) prescription. Statistical analysis was performed using a paired t-test to compare individual mean changes for each treatment category.  Results: Statistically significant changes were seen in skeletal parameters such as forward positioning of the mandible with an increase in SNB angle and N perpendicular-Pogonion distance, the class II jaw base relationship improved with reduction in ANB angle and Wits appraisal. Significant changes were observed in dental parameters such as forward positioning of mandibular incisors, maxillary molar distalization and intrusion with reduction in overbite and overjet respectively. In the soft tissue, a significant improvement in facial profile was seen due to an increase in labiomental angle. Conclusions: The results of this study have shown that statistically significant changes in skeletal, dental and soft tissue parameters

A 2 1/2-year-old girl recently arrived from eastern Nigeria presented with a soft tissue swelling of the infraclavicular region. Subsequent investigation revealed a cavity in the left lung associated with a small pleural effusion and leucocytosis with pronounced eosinophilia. Clinical and serological findings were compatible with the diagnosis of paragonimiasis. After a course of Bitin-S the chest x-ray returned to normal, the soft tissue changes disappeared, and the eosinophil count fell.
