Strongly coupled spin systems provide many curious and interesting effects in NMR spectra, one of which is the presence of unexpected (from a first-order viewpoint) lines. A physical reason is given for the presence of these combination lines. The X part of the spectrum of an ABX spin system is analysed as an example. For an ABX system, it is well known that the AB nuclei give a spectrum consisting of two AB-type spectra, corresponding to the two orientations of the X nucleus. It can also be shown that the X part of the spectrum corresponds to the X nucleus undergoing a transition in the presence of an AB-like spin system. For weakly coupled systems, the four observed lines correspond to the four different orientations of the A and B nuclei. For a strongly coupled system, two additional lines may appear, the combination lines. The resulting six lines correspond to the four spin orientations, plus the two zero-quantum transitions. It is shown that these six lines are such that there is no net excitation of the AB-like spin system associated with the X transitions. There is no AB coherence created directly by a pulse applied to X. AB coherence is created as the system evolves, and this is responsible for many of the curious effects. This is shown to be true for all spin sub-systems, which are weakly coupled to a strongly coupled sub-system.Key words: NMR, strong coupling, second-order spectra, ABX spin system, combination lines, spectral analysis.

From the perspective of structural linguistics, we explore paradigmatic and syntagmatic lexical relations for Chinese POS tagging, an important and challenging task for Chinese language processing. Paradigmatic lexical relations are explicitly captured by word clustering on large-scale unlabeled data and are used to design new features to enhance a discriminative tagger. Syntagmatic lexical relations are implicitly captured by syntactic parsing in the constituency formalism, and are utilized via system combination. Experiments on the Penn Chinese Treebank demonstrate the importance of both paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. Our linguistically motivated, hybrid approaches yield a relative error reduction of 18% in total over state-of-the-art baselines. Despite the effectiveness to boost accuracy, computationally expensive parsers make hybrid systems inappropriate for many realistic NLP applications. In this article, we are also concerned with improving tagging efficiency at test time. In particular, we explore unlabeled data to transfer the predictive power of hybrid models to simple sequence models. Specifically, hybrid systems are utilized to create large-scale pseudo training data for cheap models. Experimental results illustrate that the re-compiled models not only achieve high accuracy with respect to per token classification, but also serve as a front-end to a parser well.

Abstract [Objective] To compare the mechanical characteristics of percutaneous long plate, percutaneous pubic superioris intramedullary screw and percutaneous pelvic anterior screw-rod system for the treatment of bilateral vertical pubic fractures to provide reference for clinical application. [Methods] A finite element model of pelvic anterior ring injury (bilateral vertical pubic fracture) was produced. The fractures were fixed with percutaneous long plate, percutaneous pubic superioris intramedullary screw, percutaneous pelvic anterior screw-rod system and their combination in 5 types of models. The fracture stability under vertical, bilateral and anterior-posterior load were quantified and compared based on the displacement of the hip joints’ midpoint as quantificational index of fracture stability. [Results] In condition of bilateral and anterior-posterior load, the vertical, bilateral and anterior-posterior displacement of the hip joints’ midpoint of different models were significantly different respectively. In general, the displacement of the 5 pelvic anterior ring fixation models were ranked from maximum to minimum as follows: long plate, pelvic anterior screw-rod system, combination of long plate and pelvic anterior screw-rod system, pubic superioris intramedullary screw and combination of pubic superioris intramedullary screw and pelvic anterior screw-rod system. [Conclusion] For the fixation in bilateral pubic fractures of pelvic injury, the percutaneous pubic superioris intramedullary screw was optimal, percutaneous pelvic anterior screw-rod system was the second choice, and percutaneous long plate ranked the third. The percutaneous pelvic anterior screw-rod system can significantly increase fixation stability of the percutaneous pubic superioris intramedullary screw and the percutaneous long plate.
