Use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Heritage Buildings in Kosovo

Heritage buildings offer a sense of identity in every country. Preserving heritage buildings is important to ensure that bona fide aesthetic values are well maintained. However, the conservation and preservation of heritage buildings during operation and maintenance (O&M) has been taken lightly which can cause buildings to be abandoned due to the tedious work involved for the Facility Managers. Therefore, a need for advanced technology, such as Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM), is important to enhance the efficiency of O&M for heritage buildings in Malaysia. Even though BIM has many benefits, yet it is not widely adopted in Malaysia especially for heritage buildings. Therefore, this research highlights the awareness of BIM for social heritage buildings in Kuala Lumpur. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with various construction professionals that have experience in BIM projects and managing heritage buildings. These interviews prove that the current facility management practices for heritage buildings do not use advanced technology for upkeep and maintenance, particularly when producing dilapidation reports and measured drawings. Findings also show the challenges that restrict the implementation of BIM in heritage buildings and how to overcome the problems which have been categorized into three (3) elements: people, process, and technology. This research is expected to fill the gap in the implementation of BIM by supporting the initiatives by the Malaysian government for increasing productivity in construction projects through the adoption of new technology, like BIM, especially for heritage buildings.

Over the past four decades, building modeling has taken numerous forms utilizing available technologies and software. Building information modeling (BIM) has significantly developed with the continuous advancements in the information technology and hardware industries. The evolution of BIM has attracted many researchers to explore its possible applications in modeling buildings and facilities with a humanitarian heritage value. However, researches have not been limited to that, as they later expanded to test the applicability of BIM in progressing the fields of maintenance and rehabilitation, operation and management, and even checking the durability of such buildings against varying circumstances and usability as well. As a result of a deep literature review, this research is developed to provide a critique of the previous studies conducted on the fields of heritage building information modeling (HBIM), the relevant software and equipment used in those studies, as well as case studies and applications used to demonstrate HBIM capabilities. Also, two case studies of Qasr Al Farid and Al-Bugiry buildings in KSA were implemented in this research to demonstrate the capabilities of HBIM in preserving the heritage value of historic buildings and monuments and to provide possible means of archiving the heritage value of those buildings utilizing state-of-the-art technologies. This study is expected to aid governments and decision makers of heritage buildings in understanding the positive impacts of including the HBIM in their management and operational processes, and will also act as a beneficial guiding tool for academic researchers to identify the gaps and limitations in previous studies to work towards overcoming them.

Today, moving from a two-dimensional environment to a more advanced interactive three-dimensional (3D) environment in the industries of architecture, engineering, and construction has become one of the most significant topics of interest. This is due to several primary advantages that the 3D environment can offer. Building information modeling (BIM) can be used as a highly advanced system to present a desired reality in a 3D interactive environment accompanied with 3D reality captured data, such as the point cloud data. As such, these 3D environments can be employed for more advanced uses, such as virtual reality and augmented reality technologies (VR and AR). Recently, BIM has been employed in the context of heritage (known as HBIM, or Heritage Building Information Modeling) for different purposes, such as to provide as-built information with the ability to interact with the end user and uploading information (e.g., historical photographs, documents about materials, or any past restoration projects) into the BIM model. This research will focus on providing an interactive rich virtual 3D model for heritage management. This virtual environment can be employed in cultural tourism and used for the abovementioned purposes. The research project has been adopted in the case of the Zainal Historical House (Bayt Zainal) located in the Historic District of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This house is described as one of the significant historical buildings in the historic district. The key aim for selecting this case study is to bridge the gap in architectural knowledge regarding these heritage buildings and their hybrid structural systems (i.e., integration of steel or concrete with the traditional “Mangbi” stone technique).

Cultural heritage conservation and restoration work is a complex process that includes documentation, data collection, interpretation and production. By integrating the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology into this process, the concept of HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling) has been formed. In this article, the progress of this process with the HBIM methodology in the restoration, protection and management studies of cultural heritage buildings and sites requiring collective and holistic work, the evaluation of access to the information obtained, and the provision of interdisciplinary information exchange were analyzed. By using the SWOT analysis method, the opportunities and threats offered by using the HBIM working methodology were evaluated and the strengths and weaknesses of the HBIM technology were determined. As a result of the SWOT analysis, it has been determined that the HBIM application will positively contribute to the heritage structures and increase in the direction of potential opportunities by eliminating the weaknesses.

Studies revealed that most heritage buildings in Malaysia are deteriorating due to poor maintenance of recorded documentation. Unfortunately, conserving heritage buildings is a complex and multi-layered process that requires collaboration between different stakeholders. Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) is seen as an opportunity to establish a well-managed data collection. This paper attempts to examine the awareness, benefits and challenges of the implementation of BIM among stakeholders. Sixty-nine respondents with BIM knowledge and skills answered the questionnaire. Findings show significant attributes that could improve building conservation project performance, delivery and management, hence several challenges that need further improvement. The methodology and technology associated with building information modeling (BIM) provide architects, engineers, and historians with concepts and tools that support the development of heritage projects. However, this specific form of BIM orientated towards buildings of patrimonial value—known as historic building information modeling (HBIM)—requires a distinct and additional view, accounting for aspects which are normally not attended to on projects involving new buildings. In an HBIM context, the parametric modeling process, the basis of any BIM procedure, involves the study of shapes, patterns, or standards for the establishment of particular collections of parametric objects, as well as the record of the available technology used to capture digital geometric data. In addition, all the information collected and generated through an HBIM process must be adequately managed, maintained, and archived. In the present study, we intend to list the most recent features of HBIM, based on a bibliographic review, encompassing distinct building situations (preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and structural assessment); different technical equipment (drones, scanners, and photogrammetry); as well as diverse forms of geometric characterization (patterns, geometric rules, or curve generation) and ways of archiving data (stratigraphy, old drawings folders, or as-built models). With the aim of identifying, as an overview, we have presented the principal modeling strategies, technologic devices, and archive procedures, as a contribution to systematizing and organizing the dispersed practical and theorical studies related with HBIM.
