This paper introduces the concept of an intelligent vase that combines the cultivation of plants with psychotherapy for the Alzheimer’s adjuvant therapy (from now on, referred to as AD) of patients. RECALL (The name of intelligent vase which defined by this paper), which includes hardware and software applications, as well as a unique hand gesture interaction method, is able to collect patients’ hand gestures and play photos, to remind patients of the plant’s growth status. To evaluate our conceptual system, we created a preliminary prototype. We conducted an experiment with leap motion. This project tries to explore a kind of interaction method by cultivating plants to simulate cognitive training activities, to stimulate memories through family pictures, to slow down the cognitive decline from AD, to incorporate non-drug intervention into the family life of AD patients, to reduce the expenditure, time, and energy costs, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Visual hand gesture interaction is one of the main ways of human-computer interaction, and provides users more interactive degrees of freedom and more realistic interactive experience. Authors present a hybrid model based on SVM-LSTM, and design a three-dimensional dynamic gesture interaction system. The system uses Leap Motion to capture gesture information, combined with SVM powerful static gesture classification ability and LSTM powerful variable-length time series gesture processing ability, enabling real-time recognition of user gestures. The gesture interaction method can automatically define the start and end of gestures, recognition accuracy reached 96.4%, greatly reducing the cost of learning. Experiments have shown that the gesture interaction method proposed by authors is effective. In the simulated mobile environment, the average gesture prediction only takes 0.15 seconds, and ordinary users can quickly grasp this method.

An interactive visualization of the patients’ 3D medical anatomical model as guide is often helpful for doctors during complex surgery. However, there are certain limitations according to the actual requirements of building sterile operating environment. Traditional human–computer interaction tools (mouse and keyboard) must be disinfected regularly and cannot be used in the process. A noncontact gesture control medical model based on Leap Motion is proposed in this study. The gesture is recognized and localized without using mouse and keyboards through a binocular camera assembled on Leap Motion. Hence, the model is directly controlled by the gesture to complete the operation of rotation, zoom, and other functions. In this study, a 3D heart model is combined with pseudo-color processing technology to enhance the observability of its 3D structure. Gesture recognition technology is then utilized to control the rendered model as rotation and zoom. Experimental results show that our system has an absolute accuracy in recognizing circle, swipe, and other actions. Thus, rotation is proposed as a new motion that can be identified steadily. Rotation plays an essential role in usability, intuition, and interactive efficiency of future system design. The system is applicable to sterile operating environments due to its stable recognition process and small space occupation.
