This paper presents the optimization of fuel cost, emission of NOX, COX, and SOX gases caused by the generators in a thermal power plant using penalty factor approach. Practical constraints such as generator limits and power balance were considered. Two contemporary metaheuristic techniques, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA), have were simultaneously implemented for combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) of an independent power plant (IPP) situated in Pakistan for different load demands. The results are of great significance as the real data of an IPP is used and imply that the performance of PSO is better than that of GA in case of CEED for finding the optimal solution concerning fuel cost, emission, convergence characteristics, and computational time. The novelty of this work is the parallel implementation of PSO and GA techniques in MATLAB environment employed for the same systems. They were then compared in terms of convergence characteristics using 3D plots corresponding to fuel cost and gas emissions. These results are further validated by comparing the performance of both algorithms for CEED on IEEE 30 bus test bed.

In this paper, a novel hybrid optimization approach, namely, gravitational particle swarm optimization algorithm (GPSOA), is introduced based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) to solve combined economic and emission dispatch (CEED) problem considering wind power availability for the wind-thermal power system. The proposed algorithm shows an interesting hybrid strategy and perfectly integrates the collective behaviors of PSO with the Newtonian gravitation laws of GSA. GPSOA updates particle’s velocity caused by the dependent random cooperation of GSA gravitational acceleration and PSO velocity. To describe the stochastic characteristics of wind speed and output power, Weibull-based probability density function (PDF) is utilized. The CEED model employed consists of the fuel cost objective and emission-level target produced by conventional thermal generators and the operational cost generated by wind turbines. The effectiveness of the suggested GPSOA is tested on the conventional thermal generator system and the modified wind-thermal power system. Results of GPSOA-based CEED problems by means of the optimal fuel cost, emission value, and best compromise solution are compared with the original PSO, GSA, and other state-of-the-art optimization approaches to reveal that the introduced GPSOA exhibits competitive performance improvements in finding lower fuel cost and emission cost and best compromise solution.

Purpose This study aims to present a novel optimization technique to solve the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem considering transmission losses, valve-point loading effects, ramp rate limits and prohibited operating zones. This is one of the most complex optimization problems concerning power systems. Design/methodology/approach The proposed algorithm has been called advanced particle swarm optimization (APSO) and was created by applying several innovative modifications to the classic PSO algorithm. APSO performance was tested on four test systems having 14, 40, 54 and 120 generators. Findings The suggested modifications have improved the accuracy, convergence rate, robustness and effectiveness of the algorithm, which has produced high-quality solutions for the CEED problem. Originality/value The results obtained by APSO were compared with those of several other techniques, and the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm was demonstrated. Also, because of its superlative characteristics, APSO can be applied to many other engineering optimization problems. Moreover, the suggested modifications can be easily used in other population-based optimization algorithms to improve their performance.

Purpose A set of routers that are connected over communication channels can from network-on-chip (NoC). High performance, scalability, modularity and the ability to parallel the structure of the communications are some of its advantages. Because of the growing number of cores of NoC, their arrangement has got more valuable. The mapping action is done based on assigning different functional units to different nodes on the NoC, and the way it is done contains a significant effect on implementation and network power utilization. The NoC mapping issue is one of the NP-hard problems. Therefore, for achieving optimal or near-optimal answers, meta-heuristic algorithms are the perfect choices. The purpose of this paper is to design a novel procedure for mapping process cores for reducing communication delays and cost parameters. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm standing on crowding distance (MOPSO-CD) has been used for this purpose. Design/methodology/approach In the proposed approach, in which the two-dimensional mesh topology has been used as base construction, the mapping operation is divided into two stages as follows: allocating the tasks to suitable cores of intellectual property; and plotting the map of these cores in a specific tile on the platform of NoC. Findings The proposed method has dramatically improved the related problems and limitations of meta-heuristic algorithms. This algorithm performs better than the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm in convergence to the Pareto, producing a proficiently divided collection of solving ways and the computational time. The results of the simulation also show that the delay parameter of the proposed method is 1.1 per cent better than the genetic algorithm and 0.5 per cent better than the PSO algorithm. Also, in the communication cost parameter, the proposed method has 2.7 per cent better action than a genetic algorithm and 0.16 per cent better action than the PSO algorithm. Originality/value As yet, the MOPSO-CD algorithm has not been used for solving the task mapping issue in the NoC.
