Abstract [4-14C] Progesterone, fed to leaves and whole plants of Convallaria majalis L., was incorporated into the main cardenolide glycosides. After application of [4-14C] progesterone to the leaves of intact plants via the epidermis labelled desglucocheirotoxin, convallatoxin and convallatoxol were isolated from rhizomes and roots. When the precursor was administered to rhizome cuttings no radioactivity could be detected in the cardiac glycoside fraction. The experiments pointed out that during the stage of flowering biosynthesis of cardenolide glycosides takes place in the leaves of Convallaria majalis rather than in the subterranean parts of the plant. A translocation of these substances from the leaves to rhizomes and roots seems possible.

Abstract [19-3H ] Strophanthidol, fed to leaves of whole plants of Convallaria majalis L., was translocated to the rhizomes and roots. Oxidation to [19-3H] strophanthidin took place in the leaves only. No labelled glycosides of strophanthidol and strophanthidin were found; thus, the aglycones are not precursors of the respective glycosides. It is assumed that the first glycosidation occurs at the C-21 level.

Two new cycloartane glycosides, nervisides I–J, were isolated from Nervilia concolor whole plants. Their structures were unambiguously established by interpretation of their HRESIMS and 1D and 2D NMR data. These cycloartanes comprised a stereogenic center at C-24, the R configuration of which was assigned based on DFT-NMR calculations and the subsequent DP4 probability score. These compounds were tested for cytotoxicity against K562 and MCF-7 tumor cell lines, revealing mild cytotoxic activity.
