The concept of smart morphing blades, which can control themselves to reduce or eliminate the need for active control systems, is a highly attractive solution in blade technology. In this paper an innovative passive control system based on Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) is proposed. On the basis of previous thermal and shape characterization of a single morphing blade for a heavy-duty automotive cooling axial fan, this study deals with the numerical analysis of the aerodynamic loads acting on the fan. By coupling CFD and FEM approaches it is possible to analyze the actual blade shape resulting from both the aerodynamic and centrifugal loads. The numerical results indicate that the polymeric blade structure ensures proper resistance and enables shape variation due to the action of the SMA strips.

Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are one of the most reliable devices to control the vibration of the structure. The optimum mass ratio required for a single tuned mass damper (STMD) is evaluated corresponding to the fundamental natural frequency of the structure. The effect of STMD and Multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) on a G+20 storey structure are studied to demonstrate the damper’s effectiveness in seismic application. The location and number of tuned mass dampers are studied to give best structural performance in maximum reduction of seismic response for El Centro earthquake data. The analysis results from SAP 2000 software tool shows damper weighing 2.5% of the total weight of the structure effectively reduce the response of the structure. Study shows that introduction of 4-MTMD at top storey can effectively reduce the response by 10% more in comparison to single tuned mass damper. The use of MTMD of same mass ratio that of STMD is more effective in seismic response.

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are simple in structure, easy to manufacture, magnet-less, brushless, and highly robust compared to other AC motors which makes them a good option for applications that operate in harsh environment. However, the motor has non-linear magnetic characteristics, and it comes with various pole-phase combinations and circuit topologies that causes many difficulties in deciding on which type to choose. In this paper, the viability of SRM as a low-cost, rugged machine for vehicle radiator cooling fan is considered. First, necessary design considerations are presented, then three commonly use types of SRM are analyzed: A 3-phase 6/4, 3-phase 12/8, and a 4-phase 8/6 to find their static and dynamic characteristics so the most suitable type can be selected. Simulation results show that the 8/6 SRM produces the highest efficiency with less phase current which reduces the converter burden. However, with asymmetric half bridge converter, eight power switches are required for 8/6 SRM and thus put a burden on the overall drive cost. As a solution, the Miller converter with only six switches for four phase SRM. To verify the proposed idea, the 8/6 SRM was manufactured and tested. The results show that Miller converter can be used for the proposed SRM with slightly reduced efficiency at 80.4%.
