Takayasu arteritis is a chronic, rare arteritis that causes arterial stenosis / occlusion and dilation, affects the aorta and its branches. The most commonly affected branches are the subclavian artery and the common carotid artery. It is mainly diagnosed in women under 40 years of age. It is most commonly observed in Japan, Southeast Asia, India and Mexico. We represent a clinical case of a patient with Takayasu arteritis, with diagnosed significant stenosis of the common carotid arteries and subclavian artery. Doppler sonography was used for screening. Endovascular treatment of lesions with different localization has been applied in stages. They have been successfully and effectively treated by implanting different types of stent on the Takayasu-affected artery lesions. No intra-procedural major events were observed, as well as death or severe complications during the follow-up.

We report our experience with endovascular treatment of supra-aortic arteries and follow-up results in patients with Takayasu's arteritis (TA) presenting with neurological symptoms. Of the 20 patients with TA who underwent cerebral angiography for neurological manifestations between May 2002 and May 2009, 12 (11 females, one male; mean age, 39 years; range 31–56 years) underwent endovascular treatment and evaluated outcome for 21 lesions, including nine common carotid arteries, four vertebral arteries, four subclavian arteries, two internal carotid arteries, and one brachiocephalic artery. Eight patients underwent multiple endovascular procedures for different lesions in single or multiple stages. Mean angiographic and clinical follow-up durations were 34 months (range, 11–79 months) and 39 months (range 11–91 months), respectively. Technical success was achieved for 20 procedures in 11 patients. One procedure failed, with 50% residual stenosis after stenting due to dense calcification of vessel walls. There were no procedure-related complications. Restenosis occurred at two lesions in two patients were treated by re-stenting. Asymptomatic occlusion occurred at two lesions in one patient. Ten patients remained in 0–1 on the modified Rankin scale (mRs) during mean 39 months. One patient, however, had a score of 3 on mRs due to a traumatic contusion during follow-up. One patient died from cardiac failure 36 months after successful angioplasty. Our data suggest that endovascular treatment of symptomatic supra-aortic lesions of TA is effective and durable in selected patients with neurologic symptoms.

This study was aimed at determining the vascular architecture of the aortic arch in the Eurasian bittern. For this purpose, the heart arteries of two bitterns were evaluated. The latex injection method was used to observe the branching of the aortic arch. Two brachiocephalic trunks were arising separately from the aortic arch and these arteries were giving to the common carotid and subclavian arteries. One of the thin branches arising from the subclavian artery was the sternoclavicular artery, which was in turn dividing into a sternal and a clavicular artery supplying the thoracic inlet and pectoral muscles. After the branching of the sternoclavicular artery, the axillary arteries were originating from the subclavian arteries. The thickest branch of the subclavian artery was the thoracic artery, which was dividing into internal and external thoracic arteries. Moreover, the brachiocephalic trunks were giving rise to the common carotid arteries and these were running cranially, giving rise to tracheosyringeal branches supplying the trachea and syrinx, thyroid artery, esophageal branches, artery of the comes nervi vagi and vertebral trunk. It is hoped that this study will enhance morphological data on exotic birds since the reports on species-specific vascular morphology in wild birds are insufficient and lacking in detail.

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one cause of mortality in the western world. Carotid intimal media thickness (carotid IMT) is a safe and reliable predictor of future CVD risk. Hypothesis: The study aims to assess the hypothesis that lifestyle factors impact carotid IMT, and determine which nutrition and fitness risk factors best predict mean carotid IMT scores. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional analysis of 592 men and women undergoing health and cardiovascular risk screening. This study reflects the first visit of these subjects, age 23 to 65 (mean = 48.2), who are followed longitudinally and who were participants at a “wellness” oriented program for patients who are generally well-educated and mostly in good health. Measurements were made of fitness using VO2max stress testing and push-up and sit-up scores following the American College of Sports Medicine testing protocols, diet intake using a 3-day dietary intake survey and computerized analyses. Mean carotid IMT scores were obtained using high resolution B-mode ultrasonography of the common carotid arteries. Each subject had ≥10 images collected from the far wall of the right and left distal 1 cm of the common carotid arteries at end diastole. The carotid intimal thickness was measured as a continuous variable, using both multivariate linear and bivariate linear regression. Multivariate analyses adjusted for potential confounders using multiple linear regression and included measures of body composition, blood pressure, fasting lipid and glucose levels, and statin use. Results: Multivariate analyses show that higher mean carotid IMT values are associated with increasing age (p<0.0001), male gender (p<.0.0001), lower aerobic capacity (p=0.0045), lower intake of fish (p=0.05), and lower intake of zinc (p=0.0002). Bivariate analyses controlling for age and gender, with and without statin use, showed higher mean carotid IMT scores were statistically associated with lower levels of aerobic fitness, (p = 0.0007), lower intake of fiber (p=0.02) and lower intake of magnesium (p=0.019). Intake of protein, carbohydrate, and fat as percent of calories; as well as intake of saturated fat, sodium, calcium, potassium, and vitamin K; measures of strength (assessed with push-up and sit-up testing); and self-reported exercise minutes per week were not associated with mean carotid IMT scores. Conclusions: In this database, aerobic fitness and dietary intake of fiber, fish, magnesium, and zinc are associated with lower carotid IMT scores. Further studies are warranted to explore the impact of emerging lifestyle factors on cardiovascular risk and clinical outcomes.

The blood flow in arteries affects both the biology of the vessels and the development of atherosclerosis. The flow is three dimensional, unsteady, and difficult to measure or to model computationally. We have used phase-shift-based magnetic resonance angiography to image and measure the flow in the common carotid arteries of a healthy human subject. There was curvature of the vessels and thin-slice dynamic flow imaging showed evidence of the presence of secondary motions. Flexing the cervical spine straightened the vessels and reduced the asymmetry of the flow.
