AbstractGiles of Rome’s view of faith in the reportatio of his questions on book III of the Sentences (q. 38, d. 23) is founded on a likening of faith to rhetoric. The firm intellectual assent that characterizes them both is caused by the will, motivated by emotion, or affective bias. This paper argues that this is made possible by Giles’ move away from Aquinas’ position on the assent produced by rhetorical discourse, which Aquinas thought to be of little certainty, while Giles affirms that, based on the will’s natural control over the intellect, it can be as certain as faithful assent, and that the psychological process that produces it can serve as a model for that which produces faithful assent. The new function Giles gives to rhetoric underlines the evolution of thirteenth-century views on faith, as shown through a comparison of Giles’ view with two other doctrines of faith that use examples similar to the one Giles employs: those of Philip the Chancellor and Peter John Olivi. For the former, faith founded on affective bias is a typical example of non-virtuous faith, while for the latter, just as for Giles, it is the very model of virtuous faith.

The marine-derived fungus Stilbella fimetaria is a chemically talented fungus producing several classes of bioactive metabolites, including meroterpenoids of the ascochlorin family. The targeted dereplication of fungal extracts by UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS revealed the presence of several new along with multiple known ascochlorin analogues (19–22). Their structures and relative configuration were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR. Further targeted dereplication based on a novel 1,4-benzoquinone sesquiterpene derivative, fimetarin A (22), resulted in the identification of three additional fimetarin analogues, fimetarins B–D (23–25), with their tentative structures proposed from detailed MS/HRMS analysis. In total, four new and eight known ascochlorin/fimetarin analogues were tested for their antimicrobial activity, identifying the analogues with a 5-chloroorcylaldehyde moiety to be more active than the benzoquinone analogue. Additionally, the presence of two conjugated double bonds at C-2′/C-3′ and C-4′/C-5′ were found to be essential for the observed antifungal activity, whereas the single, untailored bonds at C-4′/C-5′ and C-8′/C-9′ were suggested to be necessary for the observed antibacterial activity.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been performed as outpatient procedure for many years. Few studies have been conducted with primary focus on patient acceptance and preferences in terms of safety and satisfaction. We tried to explore its feasibility in otherwise healthy individuals undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods: Data from 250 patients with cholelithiasis who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in BIRDEM General Hospital from April 2017 to June 2018 as ambulatory surgery (hospital stay d”23 Hours) with or without overnight stay were analyzed. Complications, admissions and readmissions, patient satisfaction and treatment expenditure were assessed. Results: Mean duration of hospital stay was 17.3 hours. Two patients had complications (deep port site infection) on 5th post-operative day after surgery. Only 2.4% patients required readmission while 9.2% patients had unplanned admission. Seventy six point four percent patients were highly satisfied with the procedure. Treatment cost was about 15% lower than routine inpatient operation. Conclusion: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed as an outpatient procedure with a low rate of complications and admissions/readmissions. Patient acceptance in terms of satisfaction is high. This study was done to consider relationships of luteal phase variables (prior to AI) with follicular waves. The estrous cycles of 10 cows were synchronized with 2 im injections of prostaglandin F2α given 11 d apart. The cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments. Cows in the control treatment received no treatment, whereas GnRH6 cows received a GnRH injection on d 6 of the estrous cycle (estrus = d 0). Daily, from estrus d 0 to the next estrus d 23, cows had their ovaries scanned by ultrasound. Blood samples were collected by tail following each ultrasound examination from estrus until next estrus (estrus = d 0). Concentrations of plasma progesterone were determined by radioimmunoassay kit. The limit of detection of the assay was 0.125 ng/mL and the intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were 8.4% and 10.2%, respectively. Data that were analyzed by using PROC GLM of SAS. For comparisons between groups, the 2-sample t-test was used for continuous traits, such as size of cl or hormone concentrations. Prospective comparisons of indices of progesterone indicated that the length of luteal lifespan was longer in three-wave than in two-wave cows (P<0.01). Plasma progesterone concentrations were similar at peak and measured as area under the curve on day 5 through 17 preceding insemination in two-wave (6.70±0.30 ng/ml) and three-wave cows (7.30±0.50 ng/ml). Length of the luteal phase (defined as from the day of estrus until the last day on which plasma progesterone remained greater than 2 ng/ml) was <2 days shorter in two-wave cows than in three-wave cows (16.7±0.30 vs. 18.40±0.50 d; P<0.05). In addition, the day of peak progesterone occurred earlier in two-wave cows (13.50±0.40 vs. 16.30±0.70 d; P<0.05).
