The purpose of the current study was to assess the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL), general health related quality of life (HRQoL), clinical oral and denture status, as well as their interrelation, within a hospitalized general population. The Romanian versions of the Oral Health Impact Profile-49 (OHIP-49Ro), SF-36 questionnaires, together with an additional set of oral health assessment questions, were administered under the interview format to 170 patients, hospitalized in the Second Medical Clinic of Internal Medicine, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The patients also underwent clinical examination, based on which the DMFT was calculated. Denture status, was as well, registered, together with the denture material. Each patient provided informed consent, prior to any examination. Questionnaire scores were calculated and used for the univariate descriptive statistics, reflecting oral health, OHRQoL and HRQoL sample tendencies. Successively, multiple regression analysis was applied, with the purpose of investigating the relationship between: the clinical oral health status, OHRQoL and HRQoL. In the first model, OHRQoL, while in the second model the dependent variable was represented by the HRQoL, each having a set of established predictors. Additionally, for denture wearing patients, OHRQoL variations in respect to the denture material were assessed, using one-way ANOVA. The mean OHIP-49Ro overall score was 31.90. The mean SF-36 subscales score was 60.66. The mean DMFT score was 18.47. For both regression analyses, all the regression models were significant. For the first model, the predictors accounted for 48.5% of variance in OHRQoL. For the second model, the highest percent of variance, explained by the predictors, was registered for the Mental Health subscale (22.8%). DMFT, as a clinical measure, was a statistically significant predictor rather for the perception in general health. However, OHRQoL was a good predictor for HRQoL, as an integrated part of it. Moreover, the one-way ANOVA indicated statistically significant differences in OHRQoL perception, in respect to the denture material F(2, 82) = 3.253, p = 0.044. The current study indicated complex relations between the patients� clinical status, the OHRQoL and HRQoL. The clinical determinants presented direct impact on both OHRQoL and HRQoL. More balanced HRQoL scores suggested that patients focused more on the perception of general health outcomes.

Objectives: To assess the oral health status and oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL) of young First Nations and Metis children. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed the oral health status of Indigenous children <72 mo of age while their parents/caregivers completed a questionnaire, including the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS), to assess OHRQoL. Analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multiple regression. A P value ≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: Overall, 146 children were recruited with a mean age of 40.1 ± 21.2 (SD) months, and 49% were male. Among First Nations children, 65.4% had early childhood caries (ECC) as compared with 45.2% among Metis children (P = 0.025). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of severe ECC (S-ECC) between First Nations and Metis children (60.6% v. 42.9%, P = 0.051). The mean decayed, missing, and filled primary teeth (dmft) score was 4.9 ± 5.3 (range 0–20), and the mean decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs) score was 14.5 ± 20.4 (range 0–80). The total mean ECOHIS score was 4.4 ± 5.9 (range 0–25), while the mean Child Impact Section and Family Impact Section scores were 2.6 ± 4.0 (range 0–10) and 1.8 ± 2.8 (range 0–8), respectively. Multiple linear regression showed S-ECC was associated with total mean ECOHIS scores (P = 0.02). Higher total mean ECOHIS scores (which indicates poorer OHRQoL) were observed in children with ECC compared with caries-free children (5.8 v. 2.4, P = 0.0001). Conclusion: Oral health disparities such as ECC and reduced OHRQoL exist among many First Nations and Metis children in Manitoba. This is the first Canadian study exploring the OHRQoL of Indigenous children in addition to their oral health status. Knowledge Transfer Statement: This study is the first to report on the oral health–related quality of life and its relationship to early childhood caries (ECC) among young Canadian First Nations and Metis children. Metis children are just as likely to suffer from severe ECC than First Nations children. The findings of this study have informed community-based and community-developed oral health promotion and ECC prevention activities.

Abstract Background Childhood dental caries can affect the children’s and their parents’ oral health-related quality of life. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of oral and dental health conditions on the oral health-related quality of life in preschool children and their parents. Methods In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, samples were selected from children 3 to 6 years old enrolled in licensed kindergartens using "proportional allocation" sampling. Then, the parents of the children were asked to complete the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). Results In this study, 350 children aged 3 to 6 years were evaluated with a mean age of 4.73 years. The mean dmft index (decayed, missed, and filled teeth) was 3.94 ± 4.17. The mean score of oral health-related quality of life was 11.88 ± 6.9, which 9.36 ± 5.02 belongs to the impact on children and 2.52 ± 3.20 to parents' impact. Conclusions The mean score of ECOHIS increased with the dmft index increase in children, indicating a significant relationship between the dmft and ECOHIS score. These outcomes can be used as proper resources to develop preventive policies and promote oral health in young children.

Aim: The objective was to evaluate oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) in patients aging 18 - 60 years, considering oral health, dental aesthetic impact and self-esteem. Methods: The sample comprised 81 patients, regardless gender/ethnicity, seeking for dental aesthetic treatment at University São Francisco, Bragança Paulista-SP. The instruments used to assess the OHRQOL were the questionnaires: 1. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS); 2. Oral Health Impact Profile-14 Brazil (OHIP) and 3. Psychosocial Impact and Aesthetic Dental Questionnaire-Brazil (PIADQ). Data were analyzed by Spearman correlation (α=5%) and descriptive statistics. Results: The older the patient the worse the oral and general health conditions found (p<0.05). Moreover, the age showed significant correlation with OIHP and PIADQ questionnaires scores (p=0.000). The three questionnaires showed moderate positive correlations (p<0.05 r=0.461 – 0.685) among them. In addition, OHIP and QIPED questionnaires correlated with general health and oral health (p<0.05 r=0.230–0.558). Conclusion: It could be concluded that aesthetic dental needs interfere, in fact, in the oral health-related quality of life and in the self-steem of patients seeking for treatment University São Francisco Dental School.

Background: Oral health is associated with Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) and may play a relevant role in oral (OHRQoL) and general health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among people with chronic liver disease (CLD). Objective: To explore the correlations between OHRQoL and HRQoL in pre- and post-liver transplantation (LT) patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 189 patients: 63 per group (pre-LT, post-LT, and without liver disease). The Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, and the Work Ability Index (WAI) were used to measure oral health-related quality of life, health-related quality of life, and work ability, respectively. Oral health was evaluated according to the World Health Organization criteria. The relationship between the OHIP-14 and independent variables was analysed by multiple linear regression. Results: Pre-LT group presented the highest OHIP-14 total mean score, followed by the post-LT group, compared to the group without liver disease (p=0.001). All HRQoL and WAI mean scores were lower in the pre-LT group than in the other groups (p≤0.013). In the pre-LT group, the OHIP-14 total mean score was negatively correlated with the Mental Health, Physical Functioning, and General Health mean scores (p=0.01) and negatively and significantly (p<0.05) associated with decayed teeth and with poor workability. In the post-TL group, OHRQOL of life was associated with decayed and missing teeth, lower educational level, and poor workability. Conclusion: Patients in the pre- and post-LT groups presented poorer OHRQoL compared to patients without liver disease. OHRQoL was strongly correlated with HRQoL in the pre-LT group.

Introduction: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an evidence-based program to improve secondary prevention outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lower health-related quality of life is a known risk factor for worse CVD outcomes. We examined the effects of a patient-driven appointment-based CR program on health-related quality of life. Methods: We utilized data from the Yale New-Haven Health (YNHH) CR program over a 6-year period (2012-2017). Data was collected on patient demographics, clinical characteristics and socioeconomic status. The Medical Outcome Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-36) was used to measure general health status. We evaluated SF-36 score changes pre and post CR with paired T-tests and conducted logistic regression analysis to examine predictors of improvements in health-related quality of life. Results: Over the 6-year study period, a total of 2,135 patients (27.9% women, mean age 65±12 years) were enrolled in the CR program. Patients demonstrated significant improvements in both the SF-36 physical, mental and health transition components (P<0.001) (Table) . In particular, patients had significant improvement in the social functioning domain (measures limitations patients see in their ability to participate in social activities due to physical/emotional issues), with an increase of 23.3 points out of 100. Physician-reported patient stress and/or depression on intake medical exam were significant negative predictors for improvement in the total SF-36 score (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.08-0.80, P=0.021), with the effect driven largely by its impact on the physical component of SF-36 (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.09-0.83, P=0.022). Conclusion: We demonstrated that a novel appointment-based CR program produced improvements in patient-reported health-related quality of life. Appointment-based CR could be a viable alternative for patients who prefer more scheduling flexibility, to optimize health status improvement and CVD outcomes.

Abstract Background Dental and oral diseases can have negative impacts on children’s quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the children aged 2–5 years old. Materials and methods A total number of 288 children aged between 2 and 5 years were selected and stratified by gender from three community health centres located in the city of Jahrom, south of Fars Province, Iran. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire whose validity and reliability was confirmed. The questionnaire was completed by parents/caregivers of the children. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed with quality of life as the dependent variable and, based on covariance structural analysis, evaluated the goodness of fit of the resulting structural equations models. Results The results showed that predisposing factors with a coefficient of 0.0457 (p = 0.015) and reinforcing factors ones with a coefficient of 0.2748 (p < 0.001) were correlated with the oral health behaviours. Moreover, there was a relationship between such behaviours with a coefficient of 0.1612 (p < 0.001) and oral health status and the given status with a coefficient − 0.9714 was correlated with OHRQoL (p < 0.001). Based on the covariance structural analysis, the resulting model was found to exhibit a reasonable goodness of fit. Conclusion The predictors of the children’s OHRQoL included predisposing, strengthening, oral health behaviours and oral health status. Therefore, planning to enhance supportive family behaviours and to boost predisposing factors including knowledge, attitudes, perceived benefits, and self-efficacy in parents and their oral health behaviours is recommended.
