The taxonomy of the Palaearctic Caryocolum schleichi species group is revised, leading to a largely new species concept. Initially described as four different species (C. schleichi, C. arenariella, C. dianthella, C. improvisella), these taxa were later considered as subspecies. Recently the taxon C. arenariella was re-instated to species level without, however, revision of the remaining three subspecies. Analysis of DNA barcodes of the mtCOI (Cytochrome c Oxidase 1) gene of all four validly described taxa showed an unexpected pattern of genetic diversity. Careful re-examination of morphological traits, particularly male and female genitalia, fully supported this pattern, leading to the re-instatement of C. dianthellasp. rev. and C. improvisellasp. rev. as valid species and the description of three new species, all of them occurring in the Alps: C. messnerisp. nov. (Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece), C. lamaisp. nov. (Italy, France) and C. habelerisp. nov. (France, Switzerland, Germany). All species are described in detail and the adults and genitalia of both sexes are illustrated.

The Cyana phaedra (Leech, 1889) species-group is reviewed. The group is closely related to the C. dohertyi (Elwes, 1890) species-group. A new species, C. leechi sp. nov. is described from Sichuan, southwestern China. Bizone phaedra var. moupinensis Leech, 1899 is upgraded to species level: C. moupinensis (Leech, 1899), stat. nov. The lectotype is designated for Bizone phaedra Leech, 1889.

Euglossa (Euglossella) jacquelynae sp. n., from Central Brazil, Euglossa solangeae sp. n., from coastal southeastern Brazil, and Euglossa (Euglossa) sovietica sp. n., from the western Brazilian Amazon, are described as new species. Euglossa solangeae sp. n. is believed to belong to the Euglossa stellfeldi Moure species group—a discussion on the placement of this group is also presented – and Euglossa sovietica sp. n. is treated as a member of Euglossa purpurea Friese species group.

AbstractThe genus Kiransus Makhan, 1994 erected for a hydrochid species, K. aschnaae Makhan, 1994, with a unique and extremely modified tergum 8 (= 'sternum 5' of Makhan), is placed as a junior synonym (syn. n.) of Hydrochus Leach, 1817, in which it represents a highly derived, subordinate clade, here referred to as the 'Hydrochus aschnaae species group'. A redefinition of this clade is proposed, based on the discovery of three new species, Hydrochus tuberculatus sp. n. from Burkina, H. nigeriensis sp. n. from Nigeria and H. ensifer sp. n. from Sudan. Structural peculiarities in the abdominal apex of Hydrochidae are outlined and attention is called to certain features of phylogenetic importance.

The present study represents a taxonomic revision of the Pheidole sikorae species group from Madagascar. Forty-four members of this group are recognised and described, and an illustrated identification key to this group is also presented. One species is raised to species level: P. litigiosa Forel, 1892 stat. nov.Pheidole veteratrix angustinoda Forel, 1892 syn. nov. is proposed as a junior synonym of Pheidole veteratrix Forel, 1891. Worker castes are also described and lectotypes designated for P. litigiosa Forel, 1892, P. sikorae Forel, 1891, and P. veteratrix Forel, 1891. Three new species of the genus Aemene Walker, 1854 are described: Aemene cernyi sp. n. (NE India and E Nepal), Aemene laszloi sp. n. (C Nepal) and Aemene bucseki sp. n. (C Nepal and Pakistan). The Aemene taprobanis Walker, 1854 species-group is established and characterised. The status of one taxon previously considered as a junior synonym of A. taprobanis is revised: Aemene sinuata Moore, 1878, stat. rev. A taxon previously considered as a subspecies of A. taprobanis is upgraded to species level: Aemene likiangensis (Daniel, 1951), stat. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Aemene taprobanis Walker, 1854, Panassa cingalesa Walker, 1865, Autoceras grammophora Felder, 1874 and Aemene sinuata Moore, 1878. Adults together with the male and the female genitalia of the new and related species are illustrated.

Morphological traits characterizing and delimiting Pleurotinae (Oecophoridae) are provided and discussed. The evidence supports the validity of the subfamily as suggested by recent molecular studies. The Pleurota aristella (Linnaeus, 1767) species group is characterized, and six new species belonging to the group from Morocco are described: Pleurota tricolor Tabell, sp. nov., P. pellicolor Tabell, sp. nov., P. lacteella Tabell, sp. nov., P. moroccoensis Tabell, sp. nov., P. ochreopalpella Tabell, sp. nov., and P. atlasensis Tabell, sp. nov. Habitus images and label data are provided for the types of P. goundafella Zerny, 1935; P. insignella Zerny, 1935; P. ochreostrigella Baker, 1885; P. macrosella Rebel, 1900; P. staintoniella Baker, 1888; P. mauretanica Baker, 1888; and P. algeriella Baker, 1885. DNA barcodes of the new species are compared with all available Pleurotinae sequences (BIN n = 117) in BOLD.

Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo-Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely “simplex ”- like species (with true sanidasters), and “sarasinorum”- like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the “sarasinorum” species group. A key to the West Atlantic species of Asteropus is provided. The family allocation of Asteropus and associated genera in the Coppatiidae Topsent, 1898 is discussed, with the conclusion that the family is undoubtedly a polyphyletic assemblage related to various astrophorid groups (Hooper, 1986; Van Soest, 1991).

The genus Carlschoenherria Bezděk, 2016 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Melolonthini) in the Philippines is reviewed. Three new species: Carlschoenherria adoradae Calcetas, new species, C. hadsallae Calcetas, new species, and C. gapudi Calcetas, new species are described, figured and compared with their close relatives. The following new combinations are proposed: Carlschoenherria palawana (Moser, 1915) new combination, C. philippinica (Brenske, 1894) new combination, C. argus (Burmeister, 1855) new combination, C. hastata (Arrow, 1938) new combination and C. vervex (Sharp, 1876) new combination. A new C. adoradae species-subgroup is proposed under the broader C. sulcipennis species-group. A key of the Carlschoenherria of the Philippines Islands, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Java is provided.

The genus Bromeloecia Spuler is revised, including 20 new and one previously described species. A key to species is provided, and species-level phylogenetic relationships are assessed on the basis of morphological characters. The B. winnemana species group, a mainly Nearctic species group characterized by ornamental processes on the hind tarsus, is excluded from the revision but is diagnosed, included in the key and considered within the phylogeny of Bromeloecia as an operational taxonomic unit. B. bromeliarum (Knab and Malloch) is redescribed and the following new species are described: B. abundantia, B. aculatus, B. aurita, B. balaena, B. brachium, B. cercarcuata, B. coniclunis, B. diabolunguia, B. ephippium, B. fractacincta, B. magna, B. peloris, B. pinna, B. ponsa, B. ramus, B. robustora, B. spathicercus, B. triunguia, B. undulata, and B. wolverinei.

Three new chironomid species of the tribe Tanytarsini are described from Finland: Micropsectra malla sp. n., Paratanytarsus paralaccophilus sp. n. and Tanytarsus paraniger sp. n. The new species are compared with their closest relatives and their systematic position is discussed. As a result of our study, the Micropsectra recurvata species group Säwedal, 1981 is regarded as unwarranted and its species are included to the Micropsectra notescens group Säwedal, 1976. The Finnish fauna ofthe tribe Tanytarsini, consisting of 123 valid species, is one of the most species-rich in Europe.
