The Noticers, the Mentors, and Me

Author(s):
Jennifer Rebecca Jolly Clair

This chapter reveals the development of a middle school teacher who savors the opportunity to share a long-standing admiration of science. Her ultimate goal is to develop future generations of curious, discerning, and informed world citizens. The author describes how a passion for noticing the world around her was ignited decades ago in her childhood and how mentors in early adulthood guided that passion into a career that she loves. Finally, she explains how the joy of discovery, her curiosity about the natural world, and the lessons she learned through immense support from her mentors combine to create a classroom environment in which all students find science accessible and inviting.

NCTM Proudly Announces the Arrival of its newest journal, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School. In so doing, we have increased the already impressive lineup of professional mathematics publications dedicated to the CTM's principles and standards. Aspects that make this journal so exciting are its focus and emphasis on the middle school teacher and student. The Editorial Panel has worked hard to address the interests and needs of the many classroom teachers who have offered their feedback, both as a result of several surveys and as a result of the “Call for Manuscripts” announcement that appeared in both the Arithmetic Teacher and the Mathematics Teacher.

One of the goals for researchers of an endangered language is to help the indigenous group to revive and maintain the language that is at risk of disappearing. Sange Phiang, a native Bugun, told me on my first field trip to the Bugun area in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh that “our language will disappear very soon”. Sange, a middle school teacher, fears that in 25 years there will be no Bugun speakers. This fear is not unfounded.
