Role-Play in Virtual Reality

The affordances of computer-based virtual reality (VR) make it a natural fit for role-play. Although role-play has been commonly used in VR-based learning environments, the discussion of design details and guidelines is limited. In this chapter, the authors present a design case and aim to share their experiences of designing role-play in OpenSimulator-supported VR during a three-year design project for providing teaching training to graduate teaching assistants in STEM disciplines. The design of role-play bridges the technical and pedagogical affordances of VR. The authors discuss the design details from several aspects, including the formulation of role-play, types of role-play, and implementation. The authors also report the success and constraints in implementing role-play. With this design case, the authors intent on sharing the knowledge about the design and practice of VR-based role-play.

Virtual worlds provide pre-service teachers with the opportunity to study teaching and learning in an immersive 3D computer based environment. The pre-service teacher is able to become a designer of learning environments in ways that were previously impossible in a traditional bricks and mortar classroom. The learning environment that pre-service teachers create can, in turn, inform established educators about the usefulness of virtual worlds for education. In the School of Education at Southern Cross University, Australia, pre-service teachers have been given the opportunity to design and build virtual world learning environments. This chapter presents the story of one pre-service teacher and her tutor as they discuss the design of a virtual world learning environment for maths. This particular design project resulted in virtual worlds being integrated across a number of pre-service teacher courses and extended into the K-6 classroom. An overview of these other projects is also presented.

This paper presents the results of interviews with the principal investigators of the current Sloan Center for Asynchronous Learning Environments (SCALE) Efficiency Projects. There are six such projects: Spanish, Microbiology, Economics, Math, Chemistry, and Physics. The paper reviews each project individually, summarizes the results, and then discusses some common lessons learned as well as some still open issues. The paper considers satisfaction both from the perspective of the course director/designer and from the perspective of other instructors and graduate teaching assistants. Theevidence appears to show that all of these groups are satisfied with ALN, relative to the prior situation. Nonetheless, it is not clear whether these results would translate to other high enrollment courses.
