A new photochromic diarylethene compound, 1-(2-methylphenyl)-2-[5-(2-pyridine)-2-methyl-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (1a) was synthesized. its photochromic and fluorescent properties have been investigated in detail. Meanwhile, fluorescence properties in different solution have also been discussed. The results of the research demonstrated that it has shown good photochromic behavior and relatively strong fluorescence in different solution and in PMMA at room temperature. Finally, photo-mode rewritable optical storage using 1b was performed. The images demonstrated that the compound can be used as optical storage material.

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on isoxazole moiety was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to red after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer. Using this dithienylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light in hexane and in PMMA film. The compound exhibited remarkable photochromism, changing from colorless to purple after irradiation with UV light. When irradiation with UV light, the fluorescence intensity declined remarkably. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer. Using this dithienylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene namly 1-(2,4-dimethyl-5- thiazolyl)-2- [(2-methyl-5-(2-pyridyl)-3-thienyl)]perfluorocyclopentene was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. The compound exhibited good photochromism both in solution and in PMMA film. In PMMA film, The open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 427 nm when excited at 320 nm. The fluorescence intensity declined along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light. Using this dithienylethene 1b as optical storage was performed successfully.

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on thiophene and a six-membered aryl moieties 1-[(2-methyl-5-(p-methylphenyl)-3-thienyl)]-2-[(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)]perfluorocyclopentene(1a) has been synthesized. Its properties, including photochromic behavior and fluorescent properties, have been investigated. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purple after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the increase of solution concentration. The diarylethene exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at different solvent.

The photochchromic diarylethene was synthesized and explored, which is named 1-(2,4-dimethoxyl-5-pyrimidinyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-thienyperfluorocyclopentene. This compound has shown good photochromic behavior. When irradiated with UV light. The compound changed from colorless to violet, which showed a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer.

A novel photochromic diarylethene bearing a six-membered aryl unit, 1-[2-methyl-5-(3-fluorophenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-(2-methoxylphenyl)perfluorocyclopentene (1o), was synthesized and its photochromic properties, fluorescence switch and optical recording were investigated in detail. This compound exhibited remarkable photochromism, changing from colorless to blue after irradiation with 297 nm UV light both in solution and in PMMA film, respectively. The new diarylethene also exhibited excellent fluorescence intensity and fluorescence switches by photoirradiation in hexane solution. Finally, photo-mode rewritable optical storage using 1o was performed. The images demonstrated that the compound as optical storage material was very sensitive responding to 633 nm recording laser, and the recorded-signals were provided with high S/N ratio.
