Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of three new N-modified analogues of hemorphin-4 with rhodamine B. Modified with chloroacetyl, chloride cotton fabric has been dyed and color coordinates of the obtained textile materials were determined. Antiviral and virucidal activities of both the peptide-rhodamine B compounds and the dyed textile material were studied. Basic physicochemical properties (acid-base behavior, solvent influence, kinetics) related to the elucidation of structural activity of the new modified peptides based on their steric open/closed ring effect were studied. The obtained results lead to the conclusion that in protic solvent with change in pH of the environment, direct control over the dyeing of textiles can be achieved. Both the new hybrid peptide compounds and the modification of functionalized textile materials with these bioactive hemorphins showed virucidal activity against the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV-S2) and human adenovirus serotype 5 (HAdV-5) for different time intervals (30 and 60 min) and the most active compound was Rh-3.

Over the past years, our research on baobabs mainly focused on the largest Malagasy species, namely the Reniala or Grandidier baobab (Adansonia grandidieri Baill.). The biggest A. grandidieri are located in the Morombe area, especially in the so-called Andombiry Forest. This giant forest of Reniala hosts well over 6000 mature individuals, out of which more than 30 have very large sizes, i.e., circumferences over 20 m. We investigated, measured and dated by AMS radiocarbon the largest specimens. We found that all large Grandidier baobabs are multi-stemmed. They mostly exhibit a closed ring-shaped structure, with a false cavity inside. In this architecture, which enables Grandidier baobabs to reach very large sizes, the stems that build the ring typically have similar ages. Here we present the AMS radiocarbon investigation of two large baobabs, A 215 (girth 21.50 m) and A 257 (girth 25.70 m). According to dating results, the baobab A 215 has an age of only 375 years. It consists of four fused stems and has a closed ring-shaped structure. The baobab A 257 has the second largest trunk of all known live Reniala trees. It also exhibits a closed ring-shaped structure, with five fused stems around a false cavity, which has an opening toward the exterior. The dating results indicate that A 257 is around 900 years old.

Abstract Circular RNAs (CircRNA) is a special type of non-coding RNA molecule with a closed ring structure and is not affected by RNA exonucases. It has stable expression and is not easy to degrade, and exists in most eukaryotes. However, circRNA regulation of cow mastitis has not been widely recognized. Mammary epithelial tissues were collected from healthy Holstein cows (HCN) and mastitis Holstein cows (HCU). RNA sequencing (RNA SEQ) was performed for the differentially expressed circRNAs, and analysis results showed that 19 differentially expressed circRNAs were identified in HCN and HCU, among which 6 circRNAs were up-regulated and 13 circRNAs were down-regulated. We randomly selected 9 circRNAs for Q-PCR verification, and the results showed consistent expression. Three circRNAs: circRNA2860, circRNA5323 and circRNA4027 were confirmed to be significantly differentially expressed circRNAs in cow mastitis. Furthermore, RNA polymerase transcription factor binding and tight junction are most enriched in GO and KEGG pathways, respectively. In addition, the regulatory network of circRNA-miRNA has been inferred from a bioinformatics perspective, which may help to understand the underlying molecular mechanism of circRNAs involved in regulating mastitis in cows.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate scaffolding performance hinders the clinical application of the biodegradable zinc alloy stents. OBJECTIVE: In this study we propose a novel stent with the tenon-and-mortise structure to improve its scaffolding performance. METHODS: 3D models of stents were established in Pro/E. Based on the biodegradable zinc alloy material and two numerical simulation experiments were performed in ABAQUS. Firstly, the novel stent could be compressed to a small-closed ring by a crimp shell and can form a tenon-and-mortise structure after expanded by a balloon. Finally, 0.35 MPa was applied to the crimp shell to test the scaffolding performance of the novel stent and meanwhile compare it with an ordinary stent. RESULTS: Results showed that the novel stent decreased the recoiling ratio by 70.7% compared with the ordinary stent, indicating the novel structure improved the scaffolding performance of the biodegradable zinc alloy stent. CONCLUSION: This study proposes a novel design that is expected to improve the scaffolding performance of biodegradable stents.

Experiments demonstrate that magnetic nanoparticles, embedded in a tissue, very often form heterogeneous structures of various shapes and topologies. These structures (clusters) can significantly affect macroscopical properties of the composite system, in part its ability to generate heat under an alternating magnetic field (so-called magnetic hyperthermia). If the energy of magnetic interaction between the particles significantly exceeds the thermal energy of the system, the particles can form the closed ring-shaped clusters. In this work, we propose a relatively simple model of the heat production by the particles united in the ‘ring’ and immobilized in a host medium. Mathematically, this model is based on the phenomenological Debye equation of kinetics of the particles remagnetization. Magnetic interaction between all particles in the cluster is taken into account. Our results show that the appearance of the clusters can significantly decrease the thermal effect. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 1)’.

Introduction. Recent population studies reveal steady growth in intraocular lens (IOL) exchanges including those for refractive and other optical reasons. To lower complication risks related to IOL exchange, we introduced a modular IOL model with replaceable optical part.Purpose: preliminary analysis of modular IOL implantation clinical results.Patients and methods. From August 2018 to February 2020, five patients as part of their surgical treatment for various forms of cataract received newly designed modular IOLs. The modular IOL is composed of two separate parts — haptic and optic, manufactured from the same elastic acrylic material with hydrophobic properties. The haptic includes a closed ring and a pair of open equally distant loops in a unified design. The haptic ring with projections serves as a base for optical disk. The current study evaluated characteristics of the IOL implantation and assembly process, as well as possible development of intra- and early postoperative complications.Results. First implantations of the modular IOL accomplished using standard surgical instrumentation and disposables passed without complications. We did not observe scratches, breaks or any other mechanical damage to neither haptic, nor optical parts. During simultaneous implantation, optical disks fixated in haptic rings preserved their due positioning after transiting through slender injector channel. There were no specific, modular-IOL related complications in the early postoperative period. The optical disk maintained correct location, delimited by fixation leaflets of the haptic ring.Conclusion. Early results for clinical application of the novel modular IOL demonstrated feasibility of its safe implantation in disassembled and preassembled modes.
