Synthesis and Property of a New Photochromic Diarylethene Bearing Thiophene and a Six-Membered Aryl Unit

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on thiophene and a six-membered aryl moieties 1-[(2-methyl-5-(p-methylphenyl)-3-thienyl)]-2-[(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)]perfluorocyclopentene(1a) has been synthesized. Its properties, including photochromic behavior and fluorescent properties, have been investigated. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purple after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the increase of solution concentration. The diarylethene exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at different solvent.

A new asymmetric photochromic diarylethene bearing a benzofuran unit was synthesized, namely [1-(2-methyl-3-benzofuranyl)-2-(2-methoxyphenyl)]perfluorocyclopentene (1o). Its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated, respectively. The compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to red upon irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA film. The diarylethene exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 410 nm in hexane solution and 462 nm in PMMA amorphous film when excited at 300 and 385 nm, respectively. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism both in hexane and PMMA film upon irradiation with 297 nm light.

A novel photochromic diarylethene based on isoxazole moiety was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. This compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to red after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) amorphous film. Also, it exhibited remarkable fluorescence switching in the solid state. The results showed that the diarylethene exhibited a relatively strong fluorescence switch along with the photochromism from open-ring isomer to closed-ring isomer. Using this dithienylethene 1c as optical storage was performed successfully.

The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism changing from colorless to blue after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. The open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1 exhibited relatively strong fluorescence both in hexane solution. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed almost no fluorescence. Using diarylethene 1 as recording medium, polarization holographic optical recording was carried out successfully.

A photochromic diarylethene of 1-(2-methyl-1-benzofuran-3-yl)-2-(2-methyl-5-(4-benzylamine)-3-thienyl)) perfluorocyclopentene was synthesized and characterized. Upon irradiation with UV light with the extended response time, the diarylethene underwent a ring opening reaction to produce opened forms and color change both in solution and in a PMMA amorphous film. Its properties, including photochromic behavior and fluorescent properties have been investigated. The results showed the compound exhibited good photochromism in acetonitrile solution and in PMMA amorphous film.

The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to purple after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. In hexane, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1a exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 459 nm when excited at 316 nm. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed weak fluorescence.

A new photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-ethyl-3-benzothienyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-3-thieny] perfluorocyclopentene (<b>1a</b>) was synthesized, and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also investigated. such as photochromism in solution as well as in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) amorphous films, Diarylethene <b>1a</b> changed the color from colorless to purple upon irradiation with 297 nm UV light, in which absorption maxima were observed at 555 nm in hexane and at 581nm in PMMA amorphous film, the result showed that it can be useful in molecular scale optoelectronics and potential use for data storage. In hexane solution, the open-ring isomer of the diarylethene <b>1</b> exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 413 nm when excited at 303 nm. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed weak fluorescence.

A new photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-cyano-1,5-dimethyl-4-pyrryl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(10-phen-anthrenyl)-3-thienyperfluorocyclopentene was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were also systematically investigated. The results showed that this compound exhibited reversible photochromic, changing from colorless to blue after irradiation with UV light in both solution and PMMA amorphous film. The fluorescence intensity declined along with the photochromic when irradiation with UV light. However the fluorescence switch in PMMA amorphous film showed more remarkable than in solution.

In this paper, the terbium -doped nano-HA powders with strong fluorescence was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and its crystal structure,morphology and fluorescent properties are characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, ICP and PL spectroscopy. Results showed that with the doping concentration of Tb3+increasing, the aspect ratio of Tb3+-doped HA particles decreased, while the fluorescence intensity excited by ultraviolet ray at 272 nm is significantly enhanced. With pH values increased from 6.5 to 10.0, the aspect ratio of Tb3+-doped HA decreased greatly, and the morphology of nano-Tb:HA particles changes from rod particles to equiaxed particles and the actual doping content and the fluorescence intensity tends to increase correspondingly, which can be explained that under alkaline solution, Tb3+was more easier entering the HA crystal, and the Tb3+would substitute the Ca2+ in both hydroxyapatite Ca(Ⅰ) and Ca(Ⅱ) site, which may block the active growth sites of the seed crystals and resulted in the growth rate and the ratio of length to radius decreasing.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(3,5-dimethyl-4-isoxazolyl)-2-[2-methyl-5-(4-formylphenyl)-3- thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene(1a) were synthesized, and its properties, such as photochromism and fluorescence properties, were investigated in detail. The results showed that this compound had good thermal stability and exhibited reversible photochromism, changing from colorless to darkred after irradiation with UV light both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film, the maxima absorption of its closed-ring isomer 1b are 529 nm and 541 nm respectively. The open-ring isomer of the diarylethene 1a exhibited relatively strong fluorescence at 492 nm in hexane solution (2 × 10-5 mol/L) when excited at 418 nm. The fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation with 297 nm light. This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable optical storage character.
