Conventional strips can be converted into tailored strips by further processing such as rolling and welding. Tailored strips have a thickness or thickness distribution which is designed according to the expected loads. A new approach for the production of tailored strips is the twin roll casting of profiled strips. This technology combines the advantages of direct strip casting and the production of steel strip with an optimized cross section. In this paper the achievable process limits regarding the geometry of tailored strips with varying thickness in the cross section made by strip profile rolling, twin roll casting and welding are discussed and compared. Furthermore, experiments to demonstrate the suitability of twin roll casting to produce tailored strips made of AISI 304 stainless steel are treated. A selected tailored strip geometry of 150 x 1.5 mm2 (width x thickness) with a difference in strip thickness of 33% over the width was cast.

Aim to produce metal strips in millimeter scale, the Top Side-pouring Single Roll Casting process and the Top Side-pouring Twin Roll Casting process were investigated in this paper, using commercially pure lead and commercial-purity aluminum as the experimental materials. Numerical simulation was conducted before the experiment. The results show that, the Top Side-pouring Single Roll Casting process and the Top Side-pouring Twin Roll Casting process can both realize the uniform flow distribution and rapid solidification, but the surface of the strips cast by the former are irregularity because of free solidification, while that from the latter present a state of rolling. And one can change the gauge of nozzle and the speed of cooling roll, to regulate the thickness of thin strips, and by changing the shape of the nozzle, the thickness distribution can be handled.

Goal. This article is devoted to the development of a new method of roll-crystallizers profiling for twin-roll casting in order to provide the possibility of manufacturing strips with variable geometry on width as one of the more widely used products in the world. Method. The proposed method of profiling is implemented by using profiling strips that cover one or both rolls-crystallizers. In this way achieved profiling of the surface of the cylindrical internally water-cooled rolls, which corresponds to the desired type of strips profiled cross-section. Research results. For the practical implementation of the proposed profiling method was developed device for twin-roll of strips with profiled cross- section. In this paper presented the basic scheme of developed device for twin-roll casting of strips with profiled cross-section using endless strips and given the principle of operation of developed device for profiling. Scientific novelty. A feature of the developed device is its universality, which provides the possibility of synchronous rotation of tension, profiled and compensating-tension rollers in perpendicular plane to the axis of rotation of the rolls-crystallizers. This implementation of the device for twin-roll casting allows to manufacture different types of strips with profiled cross-section. Practical significance. For developed device for twin-roll casting of strips with profiled cross-section has been obtained patent for the invention of Ukraine. For further practical implementation of the developed device, considering the adjustments that provide practical implementation on a specific laboratory twin-roll casting unit, the device of twin-roll casting of strips with profiled cross-section was designed. In the work are presented the basic structural elements and their appearance in the form of three-dimensional models.

Two shape memory alloys with nominal chemical composition: Ni50Ti50 and Ni47Ti50Co3 were produced using twin roll casting technique (TRC). Relatively high cooling rate realized during solidification causes directional heat flow. In result of that, high textured strips were produced. However, the total amount of the preferentially oriented grains differs between surface and cross-section of the strip. At surface, where the crystallization of the grains is the most intensive amount of the grains can reach about 77%. At the cross-section of both strips, where the solidification rate decreased, the total amount of the textured grains was not higher than 57%.
