Synthesis and Luminescence Properties of KBi(MoO4)2:Eu3+

Polycrystalline KBi(MoO4)2 has been grown from molten system K-Bi-Mo-O. Solid solutions KBi1-xEux(MoO4)2 (x = 0.001 - 0.100) have been prepared by solid state synthesis and characterized by powder IR spectroscopy, DTA analysis, X-Ray powder diffraction and luminescence spectroscopy. It was found that all investigated Eu3+-containing molybdates reveal intensive photoluminescence lines related to f-f electronic transitions in Eu3+ ions. The KBi1-XEuX(MoO4)2 crystals with low Eu3+ concentration reveal also intrinsic host luminescence under excitation in the ultraviolet (UV) spectral region at T = 4.2 K.

Solid solution BiP0.9V0.1O4 from BiPXV1-XO4 system has been synthesized by solid state synthesis at 973 K. It has been shown that the phosphate-vanadate can be prepared as a single phase for x =0.9, while higher degree of (P/V)O4 substitution in BiVO4 has not been detected for the range studied. The substitution peculiarities have been investigated by X-Ray powder diffraction, infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The luminescence spectrum of BiPXV1-XO4:Eu3+ solid solution reveal intensive photoluminescence lines related to f-f electronic transitions in Eu3+ ions.

The pure ternary phases on the line Yb2O3-SeO2 in thermodynamical equilibrium have been synthesized by solid state reaction and characterized using X-ray powder diffraction and IR-spectroscopy. There exist three phases: Yb2SeO5, Yb2Se3O9 and Yb2Se4O11, the last one with a homogeneiety range extending a higher SeO2-content. The thermal decompositions have been determined by total pressure measurements, and the thermodynamical data of the compounds have been derived. The phase diagram and the phase barogram have been established using the results of thermal analysis and total pressure measurements.

Several compositions of the solid solutions (CaxSr1−x)CuO2 and (CaxSr1−x)2CuO3, both of which are found as minor phases in the high-temperature superconductors, were prepared by solid-state reaction. X-ray powder-diffraction patterns for three compositions of (CaxSr1−x)CuO2 and two for (CaxSr1−x)2CuO3 are presented.

Ceramic samples of tantalo-niobates solid solutions with yttrium and gadolinium cations (RE(NbxTa1-x)O4, RE = Y or Gd, and x=0÷1) have been obtained by solid-state synthesis. Luminescence properties of yttrium and gadolinium tantalo-niobates under X-ray and synchrotron radiation, UV and VUV radiation have been studied in visible and UV spectral regions. The luminescence mechanisms in yttrium and gadolinium tantalo-niobates have been determined as well.

X-ray and neutron powder diffraction have been used to study the crystal chemistry of Fe doped mayenite (Ca12Al14-xFexO33). Solid- state synthesis was used to prepare Ca12Al14-xFexO33 where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.6 and the citrate gel route was used to prepare Ca12Al14-xFexO33 where x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4. X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that samples with the same composition but synthesized by the citrate gel route were more likely to be phase pure than samples obtained by traditional solid-state synthesis. The refined lattice parameters were observed to increase with increasing Fe concentration, irrespective of the synthesis method. Refined neutron powder data confirm that Fe is going into Al site rather than Ca site. A 2-point probe was used to measure the electrical properties of the Fe doped citrate gel synthesized samples and showed that the resistivity increases for the Fe doped samples compared to the undoped mayenite.
