LABOPIDEA UHLER IN NORTH AMERICA, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF A NEW SPECIES AND A NEW GENUS (HETEROPTERA: MIRIDAE)

AbstractLabopidea chloriza Uhler (1877) is synonymized with Tinicephalus simplex Uhler (1872). Labopidea brooksi n. sp. is described from Alberta and Saskatchewan. Orthotylus discolor Sahlberg, a European species now known to occur in North America, is transferred to Labopidea. Nine species currently placed in Labopidea are here removed from that genus. The new combinations are as follows: Labopidea atriseta Van Duzee is transferred to Hesperocapsus Knight, Orthotylus insignis Van Duzee is transferred to Ilnacorella Knight, Labopidea viridula Knight is transferred to Melanotrichus Reuter, and Labopidea utahensis Knight is synonymized with Diaphnidia heidemanni Knight (= Brachynotocoris heidemanni). Labopidicola n. gen. is described and Labopidea idahoensis Knight, L. planifrons Knight, L. ainsliei Knight, L. allii Knight, and L. geminata Johnston are transferred to it. Key to species of Labopidea is given.

Abstract Chiggers of the genus Parasecia Loomis parasitize birds, mammals, and reptiles in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. In the present review, we examined 18 species previously included in the genus, 15 of them being retained in the genus Parasecia, one genus is created, Nahuacarus bulbocalcarn. gen. (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae), and new combinations are proposed for two species: Lorillatum lasiurusn. comb. and Lorillatum orphanan. comb. (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae). In addition, Parasecia kansasensis (Loomis) (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) is synonymized with Parasecia gurneyi (Ewing) (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae), Parasecia gilbetoin. sp. (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae) is described and new locality and host records are added for Parasecia chara (Wharton), Parasecia longicalcar (Brennan and Jones), Parasecia manueli (Brennan and Jones), and Parasecia thalurania (Brennan) (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae).

A new genus and species, Unguitarsonemus paradoxus n. gen., n. sp. and a new species, Pseudotarsonemoides peruviensis n. sp. (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tarsonemidae), are described based on phoretic females collected on bark beetles Phloeotribus pilula and Ph. biguttatus, respectively, from Peru. A key to species of the genus Pseudotarsonemoides is provided.

AbstractAhnea keejeongi Park and Carlton (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae), a new genus and new species of New Zealand endemic beetle belonging to the supertribe Faronitae is described. Six previously described species are included to this genus and four species are synonymised as follow: Sagola dissonans Broun, 1921 and S. planicula Broun, 1921 under Ahnea ventralis (Broun, 1912); S. carinata Broun, 1912 and S. lineiceps Broun, 1921 under Ahnea lineata (Broun, 1893). A key to species, habitus photographs, line drawings of diagnostic characters, and distribution maps are provided.

A new genus Burmanyctycia gen. n. is described for the new species Burmanyctycia naumanni sp. n. from Chin State in north-western Myanmar. The new genus is related to the genera Blepharomima Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998, Bryotypella Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998 and Charanyctycia Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998. Two new synonyms are established: Bryotypella = Paranyctycia Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998, syn. n. and Bryotypella = Parabole Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998, syn. n. Six new combinations are established: Bryotypella minima (Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1999), comb. n., Bryotypella miraculosa (Hreblay, Peregovits & L. Ronkay, 1999), comb. n., Bryotypella orbiculosa (Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998), comb. n., Bryotypella rubiculosa (Hreblay & Ronkay, 1999), comb. n., Bryotypella medionigra (Hreblay & Ronkay, 1998), comb. n. and Bryotypella rectilinea (Hreblay & L. Ronkay, 1998), comb. n. The check-lists of the genera Bryotypella and Charanyctycia are provided. Adults, male and female genitalia of the new and the related taxa are illustrated.

Afromelampsalta n. gen. is described for African species currently assigned to the genera Melampsalta Kolenati, 1857. Cicadetta Kolenati, 1857 and Pauropsalta Goding & Froggatt, 1904, and the new species Afromelampsalta luteofasciata n. gen., n. sp. is described. Afromelampsalta aethiopica (Distant, 1905) n. comb., A. cadisia (Walker, 1850) n. comb. and A. leucoptera (Germar, 1830) n. comb. are reassigned from Melampsalta to Afromelampsalta n. gen., A. limitata (Walker, 1852) n. comb. is transferred from Cicadetta Kolenati, 1857 and A. mimica (Distant ,1907) n. comb. is transferred from Pauropsalta Goding & Froggatt, 1904 to Afromelampsalta n. gen. Notes on the biology of the new species, a description of the exuvia of A. mimica n. comb., and a key to the species of African Cicadettini are provided.

The generic limits of Arrhenia Fries, Geotus Pil. & Svr., Leptoglossum Karsten, Leptotus Karst., Mniopetalum Donk & Singer, Phaeotellus Kühn. & Lam., Pleuromycenula Singer, and Rimbachia Patouillard are examined. Two genera, Arrhenia and Rimbachia, are recognized. Keys for the species in these genera are presented and reports of the various species are reevaluated based largely on a restudy of original materials. New combinations in Arrhenia are based on Agaricus fissus Leysser, Merulius lobatus Pers., Helvella retiruga Bull., Leptoglossum alnetorum Singer, and Cantharellus spathulatus Fr. New species combinations in Rimbachia are based on Cyphella arachnoidea Peck, Agaricus bryophilus Pers., Cyphella muscicola var. neckerae Fr., Cantharellus furfuraceus Petch, and Pleuromycenula ellipsoidea Singer. Rimbachia paludosa sp. nov. is described from Ontario, Canada. Leptoglossum muscigenum (Bull.:Fr.) Karst. is a synonym of A.spathulata (Fr.) Redhead, Mniopetalum globisporum Donk & Singer is a synonym of R.arachnoidea (Peck) Redhead, Mniopetalum distinctum Horak is a synonym of R.furfuracea (Petch) Redhead, Leptoglossum candidum Reid is a synonym of R.neckerae (Fr.) Redhead, and Geotus glaucus sensu Pilát & Svrček 1954 is actually A.fissa (Leyss.) Redhead. Mniopetalum bisporum Singer is reduced to a subspecies of R. arachnoidea and Mniopetalum megalosporum Singer to a subspecies of R. neckerae (Fr.) Redhead. In North America, Arrhenia auriscalpium is an arctic–alpine species, A. lobata is an arctic–boreal–alpine species, and A. acerosa and A. retiruga are boreal species. Rimbachia arachnoidea and R. bryophila are boreal species. Arrhenia spathulata and A. fissa are known only from Europe. All Arrhenia and Rimbachia species are bryophiles. Cantharellus polycephalus Bres. is transferred to Pterygellus Corner and Leptoglossum bambusicola Corner is transferred to Marasmiellus Murrill. Pseudocraterellus leptoglossoides Corner is a basidiolichen and the type of a new genus, Semiomphalina Redhead. Pleuromycenula circularis Singer is transferred to Helotium Tode, and P. flava Singer is the type of a new genus, Flabellimycena Redhead. Campanella inquilina Romagnesi, based on Leptoglossum conchatum sensu Romagnesi non Velenovský, is described as new. Cantharellus prescotii Weinm., the correct name for Cantharellus albidus auct. non Fries, is transferred to Gerronema.

New portunoid fossils from southern Argentina and from the west coast of North America permit the reevaluation of the generic and family relationships within the Portunoidea Rafinesque, 1815. It has previously been suggested that the Portunidae and the Geryonidae Colosi, 1923, are closely related families (Manning and Holthuis, 1989). The new fossils suggest that the Geryonidae may in fact be derived from a portunid progenitor,ProterocarcinusFeldmann, Casadío, Chirino-Gálvez, and Aguirre Urreta, 1995, through a process of peramorphosis in which juveniles of the geryonid speciesChaceon peruvianus(d'Orbigny, 1842) resemble adults ofProterocarcinus latus(Glaessner, 1933). Examination of several genera within the portunid subfamily Polybiinae Ortmann, 1893, includingImaizumilaKarasawa, 1993;Megokkosnew genus;MinohellenusKarasawa, 1990;PororariaGlaessner, 1980;PortunitesBell, 1858; andProterocarcinus,suggests that the subfamily had an amphitropical distribution early in its history. New taxa reported here includeMegokkosnew genus andPortunites nodosusnew species. New combinations includeChaceon peruvianus(d'Orbigny, 1842),Imaizumila araucana(Philippi, 1887),Megokkos alaskensis(Rathbun, 1926),Megokkos hexagonalis(Nagao, 1932),Megokkos macrospinus(Schweitzer, Feldmann, Tucker, and Berglund, 2000),Minohellenus triangulum(Rathbun, 1926), andProterocarcinus latus(Glaessner, 1933).

The Holarctic genus Agonochaetia is reviewed and a new species, Agonochaetia shawinigan Landry, sp. nov. is described from Québec, Canada. In addition, a new glandiductor-bearing genus and species, Canarischema fuerteventura Karsholt, gen. nov., sp. nov. is described from the Canary Islands. Comparative diagnoses, a key to species, illustrations of external aspect, male and female genitalia are provided for all species. Most species of Agonochaetia are rarely collected and known only from their types or from very few specimens. DNA barcodes are provided for four of the species from which DNA was recovered. Analysis of DNA barcodes suggests that Agonochaetia may be paraphyletic. Phylogenetic relationships to other Gnorimoschemini genera bearing a pair of glandiductors above the phallus are discussed.
