Morphological Differences

Two new species of Toxophora Meigen are described and illustrated—T. paulistana sp. nov. (Neotropical) and T. azteca sp. nov. (Nearctic and Neotropical). An identification key to the New World species is also presented. Morphological differences between populations of T. aurea Macquart (1848) are recorded, illustrated and added to the key. The new species are easily recognized by: scape with long, yellow scales laterally; presence of yellow scales on mesonotum margins; posterior margin of mesonotum with a pre-scutellar pair of setae; and yellow scales forming thin bands on posterior margins of abdominal tergites in T. paulistana sp. nov., and scape entirely covered with long dark-brown scales and yellow scales forming a broad, longitudinal stripe on center of abdominal tergites III-VII in T. azteca sp. nov.

Zethus (Zethus) caetetus sp. nov. (Brazil) and Zethus (Zethus) flaviventris sp. nov. (Costa Rica) are described and figured.Both species belong to the Z. heydeni species group. A total of 218 species of Zethus are currently recognized for the Americas.

We describe and illustrate Paphanuspaloisp. n., first generic record for Brazil, and Minangapatriciamadrigalae, first generic record for Costa Rica. We present illustrated keys for the New World genera of Sigalphinae, and the New World species of Paphanus and Minanga. Minangapatriciamadrigalaesp. n. was reared from caterpillars of Chloropteryx nordicariaDHJ01 (Geometridae).

Two New Species

Two new species, Laonice costaricensis sp. nov. and L. rasmusseni sp. nov., belonging to the subgenus Norgensia Sikorski et al., 2017 were found in material from the Pacific collected from Coco Island off the coast of Costa Rica and from the Atlantic collected from Sapelo Island off the coast of Georgia (USA), respectively. Laonice cosaricensis is very close morphologically to L. lemniscata but without transdorsal membranes and having as usual capillaries in several anterior parapodia arranged in three vertical rows. Laonice rasmunsseni has genital pouches starting much anteriorly than in all known species from this subgenus. An identification key for the species belonging to this subgenus is given.

The genus Machairocentron is revised and its included species, M. ascanius Schmid 1982, M. echinatum (Flint 1981), M. falciforme Pes & Hamada 2013, M. lucumon Schmid 1982, M. tarpeia Schmid 1982, and M. teucrus Schmid 1982, are redescribed and illustrated based on type specimens. Two new species from Costa Rica, M. chorotegae sp. nov. and M. eugeniarguedasae sp. nov., and one from Venezuela, M. kalinae sp. nov., are described. An identification key for the Machairocentron genus is also provided.

AbstractThe New World species of the staphylinid subfamily Oxyporinae are revised. Only one genus, Oxyporus Fab., with two subgenera, is included in the subfamily. The genus Pseudoxyporus, described by Nakane and Sawada (1956), has been reduced to subgeneric rank. Sixteen species are included in the revision. Two new species, O. bierigi from Costa Rica and Panama, and O. balli from Mexico are described; two names are placed in synonymy [O. fasciatus Melsh. (= O. vittatus Grav.) and O. fenyesi Bernhauer (= O. mexicanus Fauvel)]; and two names are reduced to subspecific level [O. bicolor Fauvel (= O. vittatus bicolor) and O. austrinus Horn (= O. femoralis austrinus)]. All of the New World species and subspecies have been redescribed and illustrated, and a key has been included for the separation of all the taxa.

Two New Species

Nanium Townes, 1967 is a small New World parasitoid wasp genus in the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae Förster, 1869 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Previously, it comprised five species: one from North America and four from Costa Rica. The current study reviews the Neotropical species of the genus, and includes descriptions of two new species, N. medianum Reshchikov & Sääksjärvi sp. nov. from Ecuador and N. atitlanensis Reshchikov & Sääksjärvi sp. nov. from Guatemala. A key to the species is provided.

Gibbobruchus Pic, 1913 belongs to the subtribe Acanthoscelidina, which encompasses ~50% of the subfamily Bruchinae (Coleoptera : Chrysomelidae). These species are distributed in the Americas and are mainly associated with Bauhinia seeds (Fabaceae). The monophyly of Gibbobruchus and its species groups were tested based on 26 adult morphological characters and 15 taxa. Of these taxa, 13 species were recognised including two new species, G. vinicius, sp. nov. and G. bolivianus, sp. nov. Gibbobruchus is monophyletic and supported by seven synapomorphies. The currently proposed composition of species groups is: Group speculifer: G. speculifer, G. ornatus, G. vinicius, Manfio & Ribeiro-Costa, sp. nov.; Group polycoccus: G. polycoccus; Group wunderlini: G. wunderlini; Group scurra: G. cavillator, G. bolivianus, Manfio & Ribeiro-Costa, sp. nov., G. scurra; and Group mimus: G. guanacaste, G. iturbidensis, G. mimus, G. cristicollis, G. divaricatae. A lectotype is designated for G. triangularis and a neotype for G. mimus; two new synonyms are proposed: Gibbobruchus cavillator (Fåhraeus, 1839) = Gibbobruchus triangularis (Pic, 1926) syn. nov. = Gibbobruchus nigronotatus (Pic, 1931) syn. nov. Four species have new distribution records. An identification key for the species, descriptions, redescriptions, and illustrations, are also provided.

A new species of the tribe Hemigasterini, Platymystax xalapa sp. nov., is described from the Mexican State of Veracruz. It is the first species of the genus described from the New World. A preliminary identification key to all known seven species of Platymystax of the world fauna is provided.
